This is the reality. Readership and circulation figures (and therefore revenue) is massively down for local newspapers. I work for the company that owns the Newcastle Chronicle and when I started there in 2011, circulation was around 70,000 per day. It's now down to just 30,000 per day. This has...
When the people at VTEC (and Stagecoach) and NW planned this, I doubt they had a few hundred pedantic and picky rail forum types in mind.
This seems very much a publicity stunt aimed at the general public who don't really know or think much about the railways. They'll just look at it on the...
So the HS2 trains will go from Newcastle to Leeds on the existing network and join the HS2 infrastructure from Leeds?
This sounds more appealing, but I've not heard this before - may I ask where you got this from? (I'm not doubting you, by the way, just interested :) )
Is it going to be 2 hours and 18 minutes though? You'd have to go from Newcastle York, York to Leeds and then Leeds to London.
Lots of people (including myself, probably) will look at that and decide that two changes is to much of a faff to save approximately 30 minutes of travel time, so won't...
I'd like to see more non stop services from Newcastle to London.
At the moment, there is just one per day, the 7:04 Flying Scotsman service and it takes about 2hrs 35mins. With the new Class 800s, this will probably be a bit less as they can accelerate quicker (By the time phase 2 of HS2 is...
I'm currently sitting at Birmingham New Street. I've boarded a train to Glasgow but it moved forward about 50 metres and it's been stopped for 30 minutes now just further along the platform. Apparently it's tain crew that's the issue.
I was supposed to be on the 1.30 from Bristol to...
I didn't own it, but between May 2011 and February 2012, I had a Vauxhall Astra Club as a company car. It wasn't unreliable or anything , it was just really cheap, plasticy and tinny. The drive was awful and it had absolutely no extras on it whatsoever. I upgraded to an Astra SXI in February...
I was on the XC service from Newcastle to Bristol on Monday and punched the air when I saw it was the HST approaching the platform.
As I've already stated, the HSTs have more room and just feel bigger and more spacious. I like modern trains and I don't mind Voyagers hen they're not busy, but...
As someone who is 6'3", I find Voyagers very uncomfortable if I have someone sitting next to me and I have to tuck my legs in, there just isn't enough room. I also find they feel narrow (even if they aren't) and confined. If they're not busy, they're fine.
Also, as many have already pointed...
I live just near Beamish and it's always nice to see the museum getting some publicity. It really is a wonderful place.
I thought it was OK. Nothing groundbreaking, but it was interesting and entertaining and you can tell that Tarrant clearly has a love for trains and the railways - you got...
I got one between Port Talbot Parkway and Swansea tonight and I have to say it was very efficient and probably only took about 20 minutes longer than it would have done on the train.
Edit: And the bus was a damn site more comfortable than the Voyager I'd spent almost five hours on earlier that day!
It's not a city, but you can see Washington from the ECML between Durham and Chester-Le-Street. Washington must be one of the largest towns in the country that's not on the rail network.
Actually, from the same spot, you can see Penshaw Monument, which is actually in the City of Sunderland...
Just checked with the ticket office and they said I'd have to pay for the upgrade, but they said the train won't be busy so I shouldn't have any problems getting a seat in standard class - which I'm quite happy to do.
Hopefully I can get a table seat so I can get a bit of work done.
Our Office administrator booked the tickets for me through a 3rd party company on Friday afternoon. I also booked some tickets from Bristol to Birmingham, Birmingham to Tamworth and Tamworth to Newcastle for later in the week and all of them had a seat reservation. It looks like it was a simple...
Thanks everyone for your help.
I think my best bet might be to pop into the ticket office at Newcastle station before my journey tomorrow and explain what's happened and ask them very nicely if they'll allow me to travel in first class anyway.
This has been a mix up on the part of the booking...
Thanks for the help and advice so far. I might pop into the ticket office anyway on Sunday just for peace of mind.
Here's the doc along with the tickets:
Normally we never get First Class with work (Even if it's cheaper!) but this was a last minute job, so it's slipped through.
All...
