ECML blocked Stevenage - Hitchin (09/08 and 10/08))

So another dewirement / OLE damage near Thirsk this evening. This is becoming has become a bit of a joke, IMO. Seems we have new areas of regular OLE issues on the ECML. It used to be the Retford area a few years ago, now that seems to have had some attention and it's new places instead.

ECML blocked Stevenage - Hitchin (09/08 and 10/08))

Yup, long delays. LNER have advised severe damage, travel tomorrow if possible, or use alternate routes. EMR at STP have given up on ticket checks and opened the barriers. Sensible given the congestion they get at gateline even without refugees from the ECML! Hope the MML plays ball, relative...

ECML blocked Stevenage - Hitchin (09/08 and 10/08))

As the title says, report is ILE damage. Anyone got an idea how bad it is or lines actually affected (as opposed to isolated to assess)? Just trying to establish best plan for a family member currently at KGX, given LNER is not always quicly released

Great Central Railway News and Updates

The GCR has freight scheduled in the working timetable pretty much every Saturday & Sunday, one or two return journeys of some type of freight. Given how much freight stock the GCR has in good serviceable condition, it's a good opportunity to keep the wheels turning regularly. Plus traincrews...

    Lack of volunteers ?

And it is on the "learning from mistakes of the past" (as well as near misses) that our current railway rules & regulations are formed, as is all the other newer regulation many don't accept as readily. The rules & regs were just formed in that way a lot earlier than H&S! Our signalling...

    Lack of volunteers ?

Unfortunately not all railways/organisations (or departments) are as good at responding quickly. My application to re-join the volunteer workforce 2 years ago (at the same railway as Phil) was responded to within a week or two, which for a volunteer orgaisation i consider very reasonable. For...

    Mayhem at Truro

Well, if the down sleeper had failed, then the stock for the branch was likely unable to run into Truro from depot/stabling (I see it comes in from Penzance), so presumably the failure blocked the junction at Truro west end. I doubt it was directly a result of new signalling, except that the...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Looking at Fort Bill, there are a variety of sidings of decent length around Fort William Junction, so stabling wouldn't be an issue - unike Oban where space is absolutely at a premium (perhaps stable stock at Connel Ferry loop, if not needed for service trains? Otherwise it's Crianlarich, an...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Oh yes, definitely is. On busy days, such as galas, you will note many trains terminate and reverse at Rothley. This is to avoid the Leicester section bottleneck, and in the process adds operational interest. The Leicester section takes ~10 mins each way plus turnround of anything from 2 to 15...

Problems in the Sheffield area (30/05)

So I am guessing that the reason services are running ECS SHF-DON is that those drivers sign the route (obviously) but the conductors/guards do not. What a shame...

    Creeping urbanisation

Unfortunately not...the new residents are mostly unappreciative of the railway at the bottom of the garden. I understand many buyers were told it doesn't have many trains...if only the developers had mentioned diesel galas :-) Loughborough also has new housing all round the station on former...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Just FYI, for anyone else looking to visit GCR over the summer, the typical pattern is: - Mon / Tue: closed (for testing hire, TOC training, or engineering). - Wed & Thu: public running day - Fri: Drive-a-train experiences - no public service. - Sat & Sun: public running - Some Thursdays &...

Great Central Railway News and Updates

You could indeed ring up. I am pretty sure there is published data further in advance, but it might take more finding! From what i can see, the current plan suggests no service 15-16 July, a light 2 train service 17 July, and similar with added Mountsorrel branch running planned for Thu 18...

    Caledonian Sleeper

Nope. All real. 373s were used on regular ECML services for some years (after mk4 losses at Hatfield and Potters Bar). Selective door opening was among the required features, as they were too long for most platforms ( and only fitted a few at KGX, 0 1 and 8 iirc) A very nice ride too.

    Thefts at the SVR.......

Ths week I received an announcement that HOPS (Heritage Operations Processing System, hops.org.uk) has added a register of stolen items for the Heritage sector. Hopefully this will aid collectors, and auctioneeers etc., to identify stolen items more easily. Let's hope that it helps a few more...

What heritage railway has the most intensive timetables?

On that criteria, some of the larger miniature railways probably win hands down. On both intensity and frequency. Different if we only count former public transport & museum railways.

What heritage railway has the most intensive timetables?

Indeed. The upcoming GCR Diesel Gala has average 3 departures per hour from Loughborough, from 0830 and 1.5 tph in the evening until 2200ish. 5 or 6 trains operating, at least 7 locos. Should be fun if you love diesel traction (and maybe in general). Even today the service averaged 1 train per...

What heritage railway has the most intensive timetables?

In practice the GCR Leicester section is the limiting factor and effectively enforces 2tph max on full line services. It is just about possible to have 10 min headways on the rest of the line, and at galas this is sometimes used, certainly 3 to 4 tph is achieved at some times of day Loughborough...
