ORR Approves More Open Access Services on the ECML

Isn’t a bit of a kick on the teeth for TPE not getting that extension from Edinburgh to Glasgow - even more so than an open access operator will now be running it ?

    Coach Seats v Train seats

I would also say the new seat covers on 803s are good. I’ve nearly fallen out of bus seats because the driver took a bend quick. Is it a bad design of seat - there was little to hold on to.

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

GPS works on 80x units but not pendolinos or class 220/1.

Removing open access operators from the network by 2029

Better still they would close down the railways a la V for Vendetta and all travel will be by electric car or bus.

A great win for open access !!!

    Coach Seats v Train seats

I think impressions are important. I’m often do rail replacement and whilst I have no control over the vehicle I drive I can dress smartly - tie , shirt and trousers, be approachable and friendly and drive considerately. I’m the model RR driver

    Coach Seats v Train seats

The standard of rail replacement vehicles has improved but it seems any old rubbish can still turn up at times. An insult to train passengers. In addition the rail replacement drivers sometimes wear jeans and drive aggressively with no customer service skills.

    Lumo's green image

How about safety ? EVs driven by the average driver are far more likely to be involved in an accident than a professionally driven psv or train?

    Lumo's green image

A claim was made : Their overall lighter weight re in a very beneficial power to weight ratio allowing road coaches to outperform any diesel-powered train and just about any electric train too.

Train driving vs. Formula 1 driving comparison

What about comparing train driving in this case a Pendolino with a coach driver (carries passengers over long distances on the same route ?) How much do they push the respective limits of each vehicle in day to day running ?

    Lumo's green image

Yes indeed. I would like to see a top gear style race between a coach and a train. The race in question will be between London and Edinburgh. 5 Yutong GTE14 coaches (with their super duper power to weight ratio that will out perform any train) carrying 354 seated passengers vs a single class...

    Lumo's green image

What about the batteries in electric vehicles ? They only have a useful lifespan of around 5 years, are heavy and require heavy mining for the raw materials. On top of that there is extra wear on tyres and road surfaces due to their extra weight. And they are still only as safe as regular road...

Yes where was it going 95 east of the Medway towns ?

    Lumo - QUALIFIED Customer Train Driver/Instructor - Euston/Preston/Stirling - (25/03/25)

I can’t see that happening unless you were unable to drive medically any more. I’ve been on a few Lumo trains and never seen the driver come out of the cab to do teas and coffees.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: should full power be used in normal operation?

The most efficient way to use energy with electric traction is to accelerate as quickly as possible to line speed then coast as long possible line speeds and gradients permitting.

First Rail Stirling (Lumo) Rolling Stock

There are always 2 other staff in addition to the driver on a Lumo train. 222s can’t be DOO as no cameras.

    360 running speed

On the other premier northern route certain 80x units can almost match a 700 to 60 mph and push beyond to line speed. A certain variant of class 80x can nearly match a 700 to 60 mph and push on to line speed. The 700s will hold up 80x on the main lines due to being limited to 100 and perhaps...
