An average aggregates train from the Peak District replaces 50-60 trucks. Jumbo trains to the Southeast can replace double that.
Then you have to remember what goes one way loaded comes back empty so double those numbers again.
I wonder if the French have improved?
Years ago I wrote to a UK booking authority (I can't remember which) about couchettes which had been resold by the attendant leaving my party bedless for the night.
I got the terse reply, "We do not enter into correspondence with SNCF about the double...
Assuming they haven't since singled the line in the many years since I was last there, the 6ft space through the bridge at Bullgill is tighter than gauge.
It was 4' 8" when I measured it.
I acknowledge the irony in your post but the fact is there is a considerable imbalance in freight to and from Scotland. This means that many HGVs return from Scotland empty.
I am sure this will have an effect on train loadings making up trains lighter and more able to cope with Beattock and Shap.
It gives me no pleasure to say that I was poo pooed on this forum for suggesting that a single Bo-Bo over Shap and Beattock in winter on heavy freights is not a good idea, no matter what theoretical adhesion calculations suggest.
Slightly off topic but I can attest to the banking capability of BRCW dmus, having witnessed a 3 x 3 set of such units, complete with passengers, banking a stalled steam hauled freight out of the old platform one at Preston.
Presumably having decided to route the passenger into platform one...
A useful link for reinstallation to ease congestion between Coronation Bridge and Aldwarke on the main Sheffield to Aldwarke line, by removing freight coming from the Barrow Hill direction. (Sorry my knowledge of proper jcn names is as rusty as yours).
A friend of mine tells the tale of him witnessing someone refusing to take a priv ticket out of a plastic wallet.
After a short discussion the clippie punched the ticket right through the plastic!:D
15 minutes out on the road can make or break a potential path.
Not so sure about its effect regarding shunting etc, but I suppose presenting for dispatch 15 mins earlier could find you a path that isn't available a bit later.
Over and above that, freght can be just as time sensitive as...
Anyone who believes scrapping BTP and using the local force is misguided.
Even in a city the size of Manchester, such a move would result in ZERO routine patrols of major stations and a very reluctant turnout to railway property even for serious crimes.
Do pairs of 90s actually have 8 axles live?
I seem to recall that at least initially, a pair of motors were isolated to reduce current draw on the OHLE.
