BR Fares now selling itinerary-free tickets

For e-tickets, since an e-ticket can be copied an unlimited number of times, it is entirely reliant on the scan database to prevent misuse. That is relatively simple for a single or return ticket, but much more more difficult for a ticket that is valid for unlimited journeys by the same person...

    Woodlesford to Stockport, Sat 20/06/2026

I think so, woodlesford is in the list of valid stations shown on railrover.org and the trains from woodlesford to sheffield seem to go via castleford, wakefield kirkgte and dronfield which are all on the map.

"Trivia" Through stations with extremely few passenger trains which do not call

Afaict there are a few reasons it can happen. 1. The timetabling doesn't work for that particular train (at busy stations often no two hours are identical because of long distance trains, peak extras and so-on), and non-stopping buys an extra minute or two to make it work. 2. The operator wants...

"Trivia" Through stations with extremely few passenger trains which do not call

There must be loads of such stations. Up round my part of the world, I think stockport only sees about one non-stop passenger train per day and Manchester picadilly only sees them during Engineering works.

    Interrail vs ALR

Foreign buisnessmen and even time-poor, cash rich foreign tourists tend not to travel Long distances by rail. So programmes like Interrail, Britrail, JR pass and so-on can target time-rich, cash-poor visitors while presenting relatively little revenue risk. On the other hand domestic buisness...

Wrong way HST signing at Cheltenham?

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's * 5 with fancy colors - 5 car IETs * VT 4-5 car - voyagers/super voyagers. * 5-6 car stop - british rail era DMUs * HST 2+4 - shortened "castle" HSTs (withdrawn at the end of last year, so presumably the signs predate that). edit: fix typo

Trivia: Stations linked by track with short distances between them.

Liverpool:Lime street and central are very close together as the crow flies, though perhaps slightly less close as the train drives because of the curvature of the track between them. (of-course this assumes that mersyrail doesn't count as a metro).

Trivia: passenger services that terminate then start another service continuing in the same direction

IIRC before the modernisation pretty much all the blackpool tram terminii operated as loops. There are still loops physically on the ground at starr gate and pleasure beach but IIRC the modern trams don't use them.

Adequate waiting room at Manchester Victoria

Picadillys gate lines don't really have a well-defined "inside" and "outside", passing through the gates is entirely optional. There is a set of toilets in the "link bridge lounge" and there are no gates between the link bridge and the platforms.

    Odd ticket stocks

IIRC there are a shedload of "special" CCSTs. For example the "GM county card" which I use has it's own special stock.

Trivia: Journeys between two locations that can be done in opposing 'directions'?

I present cheadle hulme to Cambridge, granted it takes at least two changes, but I can depart cheadle hulme in any of three directions, and I can arrive in cambridge from either direction. And all six combinations can be validly done without doubling back through the origin or destination (which...

Does "any permitted" depend on class of travel?

I would guess this is pseudo-compulsory reservations rearing their ugly head again, and that someone has forgotten to associate the ticket type used for the travelcard with an appropriate reservation quota.

Ealing Broadway to St Albans: PAYG contactless more expensive than day return

Making sure to be very careful about which station you are selecting and avoid being mislead by their broken autocomplete. It's a clusterf*** But there doesn't seem to be anyone willing and able to punish them for it, so it goes on.

    New Mills Newtown to Manchester

IIRC routes starting or ending with a "walk" are not supposed to be valid, but journey planners seem to ignore this and there is a general principle that if an accredited journey planner says something is valid then it should be treated as valid, even if it was not intended to be. From previous...

    Platform Numbering Anomalies

Some examples that spring to mind. Salford crescent is currently in the process of getting a new platform, but they have decided to number it 3, even though this puts the platforms out of sequence (numbering it 0 would have kept them in sequence). Waterloo East has platforms A,B,C,D. Is this...

Termini that are much quieter than a nearby station

I'd imagine south parkway also sees a fair few interchange passengers (which may or may not be correctly recorded in the stats) between the Northern Line and longer distance services to the South and East. While the CLC line from Liverpool to Manchester passes through both South parkway and...

Termini that are much quieter than a nearby station

Also the trains from marple get to manchester 10 minuites quicker than those from rose hill. Afaict part of that is that Marple is Closer to Romily than rose hill is and part is that the Marple trains take a more direct route from Romily to Manchester. 1773143337 Alderley edge (where 1TPH from...

How does data get to small railway stations for departure boards?

Electronics that runs 24/7 outdoors has a tendancy to develop failures. You can repair it to a point, but eventually your stock of spare parts starts to dwindle, you go to find more but you find the exact replacements are no longer available from legtimate suppliers. You may find substitutes but...

Ticket retained by Gate at Tottenham Hale?

My experience is it depends on who operates the gateline, operators that have been using gates for a long time tend to retain, wheres those who introduced them more recently tend not to,
