I don't think anyone is saying any lines are in immediate danger - far from it, the Cambrian will reopen as before.
The point was that if some rabid right wing Tories somehow got total power in Westminster, then the attitude might be that "rural lines can go to hell".
The unfortunate...
Popularity is indeed everything.
However, if we were to face the ideological right wing "Austerity Max" then unprofitable rural rail lines will be right up there.
Not to be cynical, but cuts would be quick and early in the parliament to give the sands of time the opportunity to erase...
The Barnett consequential would also apply here as well.
So if English policy, confirmed by Westminster, were to close a tranche of unprofitable rural lines e.g. to keep fare rises down elsewhere, Wales would also have its allocation reduced. It would be up to WG to decide how to absorb those...
I don't think anyone seriously believes that anyone is trying to close the Cambrian by stealth!
Mind you, if the Conservatives won the next election, and we have deeper ideological public service cuts, who know what the future holds?
I agree it's not ideal - but I should imagine the works I'm talking about could be carried out without planning and would essentially be temporary. A local firm could be procured at short notice. A couple of weeks to arrange at most! In fact - ask the Local Authority to carry out the work in a...
With all due respect, I am entitled to my opinion, and they do not constitute a joke - thank you very much!
The ball IS in ATWs court, it IS do-able, I am sure an extra crew could be recruited, maybe at the Shrewsbury end, with a Pwllheli crew covering the severed section and a bit of...
I can assure you that speeding up this work is not going to be feasible.
The site is tidal which restricts working hours "in water", and is also a conservation site.
(Penrhyndeudraeth) Not an issue at all - I know the area like the back of my hand....plenty of room for a bus to pull in as...
Exactly, it's time a few AMs earnt their money and for Welsh Government to crack the whip with Network Rail (who partly awarded the contract to rebuild Briwet) and ATW.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Exactly. I think this can all be set up in Pwllheli, and a couple of fitters...
I have some idea, but I admit I am only an amateur observer and rail user.
Nevertheless, this is not going to be some short term inconvenience, we are talking about 12 months of a severed connection. I am sure ATW can provide what will be long term logistical solutions to this issue.....
Whether it's a 153 or 158 is irrelevant - ATW need to get moving fast and arrange for a train to be relocated to cover the severed section ASAP.
There are no overwhelming reasons for not doing this ASAP, and operating a train replacement bus between Harlech and Penrhyndeudraeth or Porthmadog.
Absolutely. Maybe they went by train and bus in the 1960s..
I doubt many holidaymakers use the no 12 service to get to Pwllheli!!
More like Audi, BMWs and Range Rovers - A55 then on!!
N.B. Whether it's a 153 or 158, there's absolutely NO excuse for leaving Pwllheli - Penrhyndeudraeth...
I understand the unfortunate issues that ERTMS causes.
There is a good case for ATW to make a couple of 153s ERTMS enabled (if that is possible with restricted cab sizes...) to allow more flexibility on the Cambrian lines.
It is annoying when you catch a peak time 2 coach 175 out of Cardiff Central to find loads of the seats "reserved" - usually, and please don't take offence at this, by persons of older years who probably like to buy their ticket in person, reserve their seat etc.
Meanwhile, we who use...
I think your observation that Welsh counties have less autonomy than English counties is an interesting point - I think the upcoming meddling in LAs in Wales by Welsh Government will cause a lot of bitterness towards Cardiff.
According to today's Telegraph:
"The scathing HS2 report ministers want to hide"......

Although I think a lot of it's been discussed, quotation from the above linked...
Refurbished HST from FGW with an operational life of 10 yrs will hardly cause that many issues.
The impetus for North Wales Coast Electrification must come from Welsh Government as well as the Welsh Secretary.
A neglected North Wales is unlikely to return Labour politicians in places like...
