Worst thing about any high end smartphone is managing the battery - if it's required to be always on and you encounter signal loss the battery expires quickly - couple that to possibly using GPS and it's a constant worry.
I use an Android phone which accepts a spare battery - Iphones aren't like...
No they aren't axle counters - axle counters are located close to the rail and sense the passage of a wheel rather than the axle.
I don't see them very often but one place is Dawlish seafront where the sea can inundate the track and make track circuits unreliable.
I used to work a mile away from St Erth Station and kept the window open to hear the Valentas throttling down as they approached the station - the turbo whine and fan noise was mesmerising.

Chatting to Station Manager at St Erth I dumped wad of old tickets in bin - boarded train - no railcard - TM is having a hard time believing my story that I threw it in a bin.

I remember an Exmouth bound driver reporting that if he accelerated (a 142) (on leaves) nothing happened and similarly if he braked nothing happened - he was concerned what would happen on reaching Exmouth which is a terminus.
I like Bodmin Parkway, at dusk the Deer come down the Bodmin & Wenford line to graze quite near the platform - also there's a beautiful walk up to Lanhydrock House.
