If it ain't broke don't fix it. I still can't find live updates - only station updates.

13,000 network rail staff to be issued i-phone 4

Worst thing about any high end smartphone is managing the battery - if it's required to be always on and you encounter signal loss the battery expires quickly - couple that to possibly using GPS and it's a constant worry. I use an Android phone which accepts a spare battery - Iphones aren't like...

Is the 153 a pleasant ride?

Apart from the low seats and poor leg room they are a pain to get in and out of - 150's are much better.

    Yellow cone-shaped things beside rail?

No they aren't axle counters - axle counters are located close to the rail and sense the passage of a wheel rather than the axle. I don't see them very often but one place is Dawlish seafront where the sea can inundate the track and make track circuits unreliable.

Why are HST's (Class 43's) so loud?

I used to work a mile away from St Erth Station and kept the window open to hear the Valentas throttling down as they approached the station - the turbo whine and fan noise was mesmerising. Valenta on youtube another another starting Valenta clag Clag & turbo whine

Staff that go out of their way to help

Chatting to Station Manager at St Erth I dumped wad of old tickets in bin - boarded train - no railcard - TM is having a hard time believing my story that I threw it in a bin. Hopped of at Redruth where staff called St Erth. A week later Station Manager at St Erth presented me with my railcard -...

    Pacer performance

I remember an Exmouth bound driver reporting that if he accelerated (a 142) (on leaves) nothing happened and similarly if he braked nothing happened - he was concerned what would happen on reaching Exmouth which is a terminus.

    Animals on trains

Recently a chap was chasing a loose dog around on Hayle viaduct - a down HST arrived and luckily stopped at Hayle.

    Most chaotic small station?

St Ives branch - single line - one platform and 2 x 150 disgorging hundreds of holidaymakers every half an hour - to be extended with a 153.

    Best Railway Station

I like Bodmin Parkway, at dusk the Deer come down the Bodmin & Wenford line to graze quite near the platform - also there's a beautiful walk up to Lanhydrock House.
