I guess some relief for Ilford will come with Crossrail, but presumably what is really needed in an ideal world is a proper maintainance and stabling facility somewhere else. Around Cheshunt might be ideal with it having two routes into London, but unrealistic because of space available, green...
I suspect the signaling doesn't meet passenger train standards, and realistically it won't be changed until the SSL resignalling gets underway in the next few years.
You could do that, but generally if a driver has caused their train to be tripped they won't be feeling in the best of moods - if someone did waggle their finger me I would think ' what an ****'! Some might make a finger gesture back, and if reported to LU it could get them in a lot of trouble.
I meant passengers to make their way via Leeds on a day train, but it would be nice if the network had the flexibility to send the whole train that way!
Empty at 0620? If I was a passenger on that I would have preferred the option to sleep in until a reasonable hour and then arrive London rather late via Leeds. Some passengers would of course want to get to London as soon as possible and leave the train in the early hours.
Platform 11 was closed and filled in sometime around 1978, then reopened some 10-12 years later. Before the diversion of the suburban services to Moorgate there were several more platforms beyond the wall, including one for trains coming up from what was later known as Kings Cross Midland...
A strike doesn't have to be for a calendar day - it can start at a shift change time (look at some recent London Underground strikes) or can be just for a few hours (uncommon on British railways).
Yep, the IC3 stock is the same vintage as the 158s. I think it also had quite a few teething troubles, but remember traveling a cross-country journey on it in around 1995 and thinking what a world away from 158s it was. Partly that's due to the loading gauge, but also because it wasn't designed...
