The last time you could get a train direct from St Helens to Manchester was 1952, from St Helens Central via Lowton St Mary's and Irlam to Manchester Central. By the end there were only half a dozen trains each way per day.
"excuses" is not the right word, as it suggest the OP is making up the whole thing to avoid prosecution. We have to assume here he is telling the truth unless there is something clearly inconsistent or phoney about the story presented.
The minimum connection time at Central includes an allowance for getting between the High Level and Low Level platforms, which of course wouldn't be necessary in this case. And 30 minutes seems a little optimistic for Queen St-Central particularly if you're not quick on your feet.
That's not how I remember it. The sprinterisation coincided with the diversion of Liverpool-Leeds trains via Warrington. The last loco hauled trains through Warrington Central were the 5 coach Liverpool-Sheffield trains which I remember using in 1988. Hauled by class 31s I think.
No reason was given. With a short time left until the train my relative decided to buy vua phone rather than enter into a prolonged discussion with the ticket clerk. The TPE tickets come up when you do an NRE search.
Rather an odd one...
A relative tried to buy a SVR (SC/TPE only) from Preston to Aberdeen this morning, from the ticket office at Preston. Not available! (though the more expensive Via Carlisle and Any Permitted ones were).
Was able to buy one on the phone and print out at the ticket...
Even Hardknott Pass, a much tougher proposition than Porlock Hill, is within the capacity of more or less any modern car in first gear. As long as you're not towing a caravan!
I may be wrong about this, but I don't think Edinburgh has barriers. Not sure how anyone can be prevented from breaking their journey. Or, conversely, how one could prove that in a 3 hour wait one has not left the station.
Really? Haven't we got a new PM who has promised to review the whole project? In view of Brexit isn't HS2 a tempting target for a chancellor trying to plug the resultant hole in public finances?
On the contrary. Given the horrendous state of BR finances at the time it would have been understandable for a policy of managed decline to be adopted, with services withdrawn whenever significant repairs were required or when rolling stock became life expired (effectively a continuation of the...
I'm of the opinion, and have been for a while, that HS2 won't see the light of day in its original form. I see a lot of examples of the "sunk cost fallacy" above! My current theory is that it will be parked in a siding as part of an emergency budget following a no-deal Brexit.
Not only the congestion round Stockport, but the Deansgate-Piccadilly bottleneck too. If links were put in to the Wigan/Bolton/Earlestown lines passengers from the South could have continued their journeys without having to change stations.
