They are not nice to look at (IMHO) but are comfy enough to sit on. Unlike what seems to be the latest station bench design, thick wooden (?) planks on a metal frame that are horrendously uncomfortable.

Decided for my 'Saturday out' I wouldn't go too far, rattling along in coaches and buses isn't really my cup of tea, so headed out from Sway to Totton, then Southampton, then back home. The RRBs from Sway at 09:25 and 10:25 were cancelled, so went for the 11:25 'stopper' to Southampton Airport...

I have a theory that the background noise, mostly air-con roar (big Desiro problem) or DMU engine noise, on modern trains contributes to this. I think if there's a background roar, everyone gets a little bit noisier. If the carriage is close to silent, everyone realises their noise is audible...
