I've always found it slightly vexing that the xx:05 weekday stoppers eastbound from Bournemouth are almost always 444s, except for the busiest time, the 18.05, which is always a crowded 450...

Maybe a better bet than the Somerset and Dorset would be the Salisbury and Dorset Junction Railway? This would link Poole to Wimborne and then on directly to Salisbury (and thence Bath and Bristol). It's much shorter than the S&D and yet would give similar benefits in speeding up...
