    overheads interview

I remember applying for the OHL dept many moons ago . My day a railwayman for over 42 years went off his head lol . Said it’s the worst job in the railway and he wouldn’t wish it on his worst enemy lol . Fortunately I never got the job and moved into signalling instead . Now I know the S&T are...

TPE Manchester Airport < > Scotland Cancellations

Thanks , they gave me a “counted place” reservation . So I would assume it will be first come first served as no one will have a reservation?

TPE Manchester Airport < > Scotland Cancellations

The new Liverpool lime st to Glasgow has been running the last few weeks as empties with no problems 8-). Any TPE services to from Edinburgh/Glasgow to MIA that have been cancelled were showing driver shortage . Does anyone know why I can’t reserve seats on the Edinburgh to MIA route ??

Purchasing a train ticket with an App

It is acceptable practise in Scotland . I’ve never ever in my lifetime travelling on trains up here seen a guard or ticket examiner try and do someone for not having a ticket . Unless they are blatantly trying to avoid paying . Why give them a portable ticket machine in the first place lol ...

Purchasing a train ticket with an App

Never going to happen as my booking office is 99% of the time closed. My passes are normally sitting on the table ready to buy my ticket so it’s not as if am trying to dodge paying for a ticket . As a grade 7 signaller I hardly think I’m going to risk my job over a £3 ticket lol .

Purchasing a train ticket with an App

Was going to ask if this buying a ticket before you board applies only in England ??? Depends on how I feel on the day as to wether I go to the ticket office or buy on the train . Never had a problem and get my staff discount to .

    A career as a signaller

If it’s your panel the shifts are yours . No question about it . Get on to the roster clerk and get him told. If it’s a different panel/ws and the gpr is covering that and his rest days are the same as that turn then they are his/hers .

Trains Delayed on the West Yorks Triangle

The old TDM panels had emergency panels in the relay rooms which could be brought in when we had electronic link failures . In the event of a power failure on the ground the emergency panels were of no use . UPS and the use of generators have solved a lot of problems in remote areas and frankly...

    A career as a signaller

If you picked up absolute block easily then track circuit block will be a dawdle. You will be busy and will have some horrific shifts but they make you a better signalller .Yes it’s very daunting going into a big box for the first time and seeing all the tracks and equipment. But you probably...

    Signal Passed at Danger

I always tell the driver to stop short of the points and tell him to check they are in the correct position for the move . Even if the route has been check a dozen times .

Yes you are given your holiday dates . They will go through a cycle for a few years so you can tell when you are off .I’ve never took my holidays on the ones I’ve been allocated. You can swap with people or move to a vacant block . Normally it’s 4 in a block but it’s fairly relaxed . Night...

TRTS - does it really mean 'Train Ready to Start'?

We have two types of TRTS . One type the station staff press the TRTS and a light will flash in the box to let the signaller know the train is ready to depart . The second one the driver will press the TRTS and the signal will clear . The second one is on a single branch line which is set on...

    A career as a signaller

Every Sunday shift booked or not will be payed at time and a half . The ones built into your roster are guaranteed overtime , no one can take them off you. You will be booked off your Sunday shift in the middle of your summer fortnight. Though I have seen some greedy beggars work it lol ...

    A career as a signaller

Shows you how much the railway has changed over the years . I couldn’t tell you 1 NTS or any the live saving rules . Simply because they don’t help me to become a better signaller so I never payed any attention to them . New entrants really have got a tough job getting in . But good luck to...
