    'National Preservation' forum down?

Has anyone else been failing to access the National Preservation forum successfully in the last couple of days, or is it just me? I was getting "502 - Bad Gateway" when I tried. I'm not aware of any changes on my machine that might have altered my access ability. (Curiously, yesterday I...

Where could the Fairbourne Railway go when the village is abandoned to the waves?

Erm - different gauge nowadays! The ex-Fairbourne locos which are now based at Kirklees Light Railway (Katie/Sian) were from pre-gauge conversion.

La'al Ratty (Ravenglass and Eskdale) blocked by landslide

This is at the eastern end of Horsefalls Wood, approaching Rock Point from the Ravenglass direction (between Murthwaite Halt and Irton Road Station) - unfortunately the most inaccessible part of the line by any means other than train.

Remaining single lines with traditional token working.

Yes - St Bees to Whitehaven too. At Whitehaven, the token is collected by train crew from/returned to a remote (from the signal box) machine in a cabinet on the through platform at the tunnel end.

    AC/DC overhead lines mixing

Nobody in this thread has yet mentioned the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn in Switzerland which has one track approaching it's Zurich terminus dual-electrified at 15kV AC and 1200v DC, the latter with offset catenary! The latest Be510 Uetliberg EMUs are dual voltage with a pantograph that...

Using debit or credit cards abroad, advice please!

Look into setting up a Starling Bank [link] current account, depositing some money in it before you go, and topping up online if you need to while you're away. Fee-free use of their debit card abroad and reasonable exchange rates. In the last couple of years (when travel abroad was still...

Ron Connor trading as Model Rail Signs

Yes I did eventually get it, last November, from him at his stand at the Warley Model Railway Exhibition. I have no subsequent information. The absence of model railway exhibitions due to coronavirus is unlikely to have helped his business.

Channel 5 Worlds Most Scenic Railways

The nearest end of the Albula Tunnel is about 12km as the crow flies from the Landwasser Viaduct (a lot further measured along the railway because of all the curvature, including the spirals between Preda and Bergun en route). The new Albula tunnel simply closely parallels the old one and...

Channel 5 Worlds Most Scenic Railways

..... and next week (Fri 3 July) we have "Great Luxury Railway Journeys" - according to Radio Times "Train trips across Canada, Scandinavia, Europe and New Zealand, meeting the characters who travel, work and live along the lines. Bill Nighy narrates." Sounds suspiciously like a compilation...

Vossloh completes sale of locomotive business to CRRC

What's the difference between the "Locomotives business unit" sold to CRRC, and the "Rail Vehicles business unit" sold to Stadler? Later class 68/88 supplied to Direct Rail Services were labelled Stadler, and they're locomotives, surely?!

Channel 5 Worlds Most Scenic Railways

I concluded it was a straightforward repeat despite not being marked as such. I recalled lots of it too.

Other Goods Traffic on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway

Iron Ore originally, granite later. Also a general carrier for the valley so a variety of stuff in small quantities. There was a short-lived attempt to set up a business making breeze blocks from the large supplies of granite dust. However, no slate quarries, Scouse77.

    Red Telephone boxes

One in Ravenglass, west Cumbria, on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway platform. Still had phone equipment in it last year when I last saw it, but non-operational.

    Jaywick Miniature Railway

No, they left the Ravenglass and Eskdale a very long time ago. I found this [link] via Google which provides some subsequent history, but dates back to 2008.
