Sign language on train route information displays (and station departure boards)

I think you'll find a *lot* of people at major interchange stations such as Peterborough or Doncaster are keen to find the platform for their train, and don't especially want to stare at a screen for 3 minutes desperately waiting for it to get back to page 1 so they can discover where to catch...

Sign language on train route information displays (and station departure boards)

Whatever the benefits may be, it is very unhelpful when you're trying to work out where to catch your connection leaving in 5 minutes time and the departures board is stuck on page 2 for 2-3 minutes while every single word is signed. Fine if there are other boards nearby, but often it isn't...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

No, though it has moved from 'extremely poor' before the December 2025 timetable change to 'totally unacceptable', and then, incredibly, worse still to 'complete disaster' over the last few months. Of course they are now using 'hot weather' as an excuse, as if the service was perfectly fine...

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

They're not just used for 15 minute metro journeys though - try sitting on one for the 2.5 hours from Cambridge to Brighton. I did that once some years back and I'm not sure my body has ever quite forgiven me.

Thameslink to replace cushions on class 700 ironing board seats to improve comfort.. Finally..

It sounds like a reasonable improvement - though pretty much anything done to the interior of the 700s would feel like an improvement as far as I'm concerned. Rock-hard seats, no armrests, no seat-back tables, no plug sockets, very little space for your legs in the window seats, no wifi...

Why is Edge Hill closed on Sundays?

Yes, Sunday service at Roby started at some point between 1997 and 2007 (the only two timetables I have immediately to hand). In 2007 Eccleston Park and Bryn were still closed on Sundays too - not sure when services started calling on Sundays to either of those. Maybe the key question here is...

The end of 387 on Cambridge fasts

It would be nice if GN managed to fix the seemingly-never-ending issues on the 379s first. 0946 Ely-KGX cancelled (yet again) this morning due to the inbound service (a pair of 379s) being cancelled at Cambridge due to a 'train fault', which seems par for the course at the moment.

    Kent Rover

The quote starting the original thread was 'they are due to be withdrawn from the 1 March 2026 from ticket offices. They will still be available to purchase from our website. Please note, these tickets will have to be posted out, so something to buy ahead of time.'; apparently this was from the...

    Kent Rover

Thanks for the details. Still seems odd to restrict this to SE ticket offices only (and not able to purchase in advance?) but I suppose this is a bit better than the original 'online only' push. I may try to do one of these later in the year, if so I'll report on how easy/hard it actually was...

Cambridge Stations ticketing and the forthcoming Cambridge South

Finally got around to trying this yesterday, and indeed a Ely <-> Cambridge South return doesn't open the barriers at Cambridge either. Which is pretty poor.

    Heat Related Disruption - 13 Aug 2026

It's been pretty poor for years between Ely and Waterbeach. Though it does seem to be quite a bit worse still over the last couple of months.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Take another look at 1T50 compared to 1C82. The former was right behind the latter all the way from Hitchin to Cambridge, but as 1C82 stops everywhere and 1T50 doesn't, this caused 1T50 to lose 10-11 minutes on that section. This is exactly what happens all the time with this idiotic December...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

They were changed by 2.30am (I'm a bit of a night owl :) ) - not terribly useful for the majority of commuters. I'm not entirely sure what ended up running this morning and/or what was *supposed* to be running, as everything seemed to be running late anyway. (Every GA train through Ely has ran...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

And super-helpful that none of this is reflected in planners at 10.30pm the night before... Guess I'll plan to get out of bed a little earlier and go for GA services for my commute instead, which fortunately is an option for me (and cheaper too, if I go for the GA-only tickets...)

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

It was a step up from 'absolute disaster' as we've had for the previous month or so. But it isn't great if 'not total meltdown' is that best we can expect. Of the 40 'evening peak' trains last week (arriving Ely between 1800 and 2200): - 2 (5%) arrived on time. - A further 10 (25%) arrived...

    Kent Rover

Have they reversed their (rather odd) change to make this rover an online-only purchase then? As documented in this thread earlier this year: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/kent-rover-becoming-online-only.299073/

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

While pre-December 2025 we did have a great many problems, I think it is hard to deny that things are even worse since the East Coast timetable rewrite, which was entirely predictable and indeed was predicted by many of us on here. Trying to thread the Thameslink - which may have been delayed...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Another classy evening on GN with 1T48 terminated at Ely and 1T50 at Cambridge, both due to 'train faults'.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Yes - I've not been up that way for a few weeks, but I have noticed the ride quality between Ely and Waterbeach, particularly in the up direction, appears to have got significantly worse over the past week - presumably due to the ground being excessively dry.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Didn't notice that, thanks. Not that we've had a whole slew of weekend closures recently when they could have sorted out something like that...
