Sadly, from what I know of the ale trail, it started off as a civilised thing where real ale drinkers would go to sample the ales and pubs of that area; however, it has since turned into what was shown on the program where people just want to go out and get drunk.

The whole 'vending machines take away people's jobs' thing isn't necessarily true. Remember, these machines have to be designed, built, maintained, restocked, improved, etc, etc; and those jobs have to be done (in the main) by people.
