    Busiest Level Crossing?

Whenever I am at Exeter St Davids it surprises me that there is a level crossing so close to what is a rather busy large station. The road that crosses the tracks there isn't exactly quiet either! Are there other similar stations with level crossings in such proximity? What's the busiest...

Most scenic railway lines in Britain?

I was very impressed by the scenery on a train from Stockport-Sheffield a few months back. Another vote here for Exeter-Newton Abbot too.

Proposed upgrade of Norton Bridge Junction

No wonder I hadn't seen it, I've never been to 'Infrastructure'!

Proposed upgrade of Norton Bridge Junction

£200 million to build a 'flyover' where trains cross the WCML to get on to the Stone branch - link to the article in Stoke's 'Sentinel' newspaper below: The Sentinel (apologies if posted already)

Regular weekly commute: Manchester to London, please help.

Have you considered flying? BMI fly from Manchester-Heathrow for £37-£41 each way. The early morning MAN-LHR flight (lands at 0815) tends to sell out, but if you can grab it, even with the tube fare on top it's not outrageous compared with the train. BA will do it for around £42 too, again...

    Stoke-London-Northampton-Stoke?

Thanks - unfortunately someone at work is booking it for me, so while I've tried to explain what I need, getting it may be another matter!

    Stoke-London-Northampton-Stoke?

Hi all, I need to do the following journeys this Fri/Sat: Friday: Stoke-on-Trent to Leyton Midland Road, arriving no later than 11am Leyton Midland Road to Northampton, arriving no later than 7pm Saturday: Northampton to Stoke-on-Trent, no time restriction but ideally leaving...

Railway/TOC Websites - The Good and Bad

As someone who uses it often, Cross Country's website is RUBBISH! The only reason I persist is for the 'pick your seat' function, but often this doesn't work. It's just really slow and clunky, and seems to pick and choose whether it remembers your journey if you need to change your search...

    Station Announcers & Announcements

There's a guy at Stoke who has a good local accent, so he pronounces Pendolino as 'pandolino' which makes me laugh. They very rarely announce the Northern Rail service to Manchester, so the train often arrives and departs without any public acknowledgement of it. I like to think the announcer...

    Disabled Railcard query

I'm confused - someone said they didn't take up a disabled railcard because they found the trainline cheaper. Don't you get railcard discounts on most advance purchase tickets too? I'm sure my other half does (which is why he's always travelling in first class and I'm not!).

    Virgin wekend 1st

I was in first on a pendolino from Euston-Stoke-on-Trent last Sunday and it was an at-seat trolley service of tea, coffee, water, biscuits & crisps. You can ask for whichever combo you like (I had tea, water & biscuits), if you ask for water it doesn't mean you can't have a coke/tea/whatever as...

can virgin staff refuse you to enter the train

I've been on a very busy Virgin service at Manchester Piccadilly (destination was Euston) and people were asked to get off and switch to another train as it wouldn't move otherwise - I think there were so many people they physically couldn't shut the doors. The platform staff were stopping...

What are your favourite film or television scenes involving the railway??

Another great New York subway film is The Warriors, about a gang who have to get from a meeting in the Bronx to their home turf of Coney Island. The episode of the West Wing where Josh, Toby and Donna get left behind by the campaign and endure time zone mix-ups and a train going the wrong way...

    London - Stoke-on-Trent: Valid Route?

Thanks - the SOT-EXD via London is indeed two separate tickets - I didn't get as far as the screen on National Rail that told me that. As I wouldn't be leaving London until after 3pm, it looks like the cheapest option for that is still more expensive than the Exeter journey. Just need to...

    London - Stoke-on-Trent: Valid Route?

Hi all, First post on here, I hope you can help! I have an advance ticket on a train from Stoke-on-Trent to Exeter St Davids tomorrow evening. My work has now decided that I need to go to London for a meeting. In theory I will be back at Stoke in time to catch my train to Exeter, but...
