    Caledonian Sleeper

Similar on the Reunification Express (sleeper) in Vietnam where the tannoy plays a loud boisterous rousing communist ditty. 1710506425 You don’t get signs quite like this in the toilet cubicle on the Cally Sleeper……

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

Agreed but in the unlikely event that someone turned up with a cruet set I think I’d be incredibly impressed and it would add a surreal twist to the occasion!

World Book Day - who would you have gone as?

As it’s world book day today 7-3-24 and my grandchildren are going to school dressed as various characters, I was pondering who I would have gone dressed as. I’ll start the ball rolling with William Brown in Richmal Crompton’s Just William.

    Pre-nationalisation schemes that never happened

The SR’s proposal for the London airport at Lullingstone, Kent. The station got built but never opened although the canopies were relocated to Canterbury East in the early’60s

Worst examples of BR era "vandalism"?

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

You’ve raised a very good point about online retailers who don’t state dimensions on all sorts of products.

The early years of Class 56s and Construction

I remember seeing a number of Class 56 cab frames at Ashford Works Open Day in 1977. I got the impression then that there wasn’t a lot of manufacturing going on at Ashford and so it gave them something to do. 1709370978 I even took a really bad transparency….

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

The vicarage featured in ITV’s Grantchester, or more specifically the fake wisteria dangled over front elevation. It seems to be in bloom throughout the spring, summer and autumn when other plants and trees are changing leaf colour and blossom as they should do!

    Weird train-related dreams

I was on holiday in Cambodia a few weeks ago and although I didn’t get to see any railways there I had read up on what does exist and plans to rebuild some lines which were wrecked after years of war and strife. Hence the dream I had last night in which I saw a reopened line with a Hastings DEMU...

Please reinstate my local station at Sandwich is within walking distance and much closer than the alternatives you’ve left me of Deal or Ramsgate. Thanks!

    Favourite Clothing range

Probably the best ‘jacket’ I’ve ever had is this smock made by Mousqueton. It’s made of canvas sail cloth, it’s pretty waterproof and incredibly hardwearing, robust and very comfortable to wear. It should keep me going for the next twenty years at least.

Platform bells to signal trains to passengers

Glossop had a bell which sounded before the arrival of trains when I commuted from there in the ‘80s and 90’s. Maybe it still does?

Recommendation for escorted rail tour of Vietnam & Cambodia

Currently on the excellent Mercury Vietnam and Cambodia Oddesey tour and we’ve done rail from Hanoi to Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City. A wonderful experience of a fast changing area. A few loco pics for you and only wish I could post some coastal videos.
