Well that’s an interesting if not challenging craft and design challenge. I’d opt for something very small and nonferrous to fashion a ring from; something like an old brass uniform button springs to mind (search vintage railway button on eBay). Good luck with the ring and with the proposal!

On holiday in Vietnam a few months ago with a group, we took a train from Hanoi and I told a fellow in his 50’s I was going to walk down the platform to photograph the loco. He had no idea what I meant by ‘loco’ and even ‘locomotive’ had to be backed up with ‘the engine on the front’.
