First Edinburgh service was ‘piped in’ to Kings Cross this morning (LNER piper visible extreme left of photo). Tartan livery looks good!

Don’t know the answer but it’s a good question! Went to both stations last year, didn’t see anybody get on or off at either, and a walk round the area revealed very few push or pull factors. They being so close to one another and Grimsby Town I’m surprised they’ve survived.
