Question about Class 55 locomotive "Deltic"

If this locomotive had been configured while still on the drawing board for 125mph running rather than 100mph (maybe with the 12-cylinder Paxman Valenta engines, running at 1,500 rpm and developing 2,250 bhp) rather than the 1,650 bhp engines they were eventually given would their replacement...

It's a long shot but can anyone identify this station please?

If any sharp eyed member happens to spot the station name anywhere on the image, I apologise for that. Just had eye surgery and my peepers are not so good for now. Scanned the picture from an elderly person's photo album. Nothing written on the back of the photo.

Seems weird. Why does the Single price vary.

When I select a Single journey, it is £18.15 but when I select a Return journey, the Single price somehow shoots up to £18.80 Journey from Three Oaks to Four Oaks. Apologies for size of image but necessary to read the text.

This 1860 railway timetable seems very confusing

Are there any timetable experts/enthusiasts on here who can tell (a) how many trains there actually are indicated in the timetable (b) where they go. I'm getting lost.

Last night's (01/11) 1D36 the 2333 London Kings Cross to Leeds

Sat at Peterborough for 20 minutes. Does anyone know what happened? Despite the journey time allowed for this late night service being very generous, it was still 15 down at Leeds with very little lost time having been made up.

    Ideas for alternative railway projects

So many people appear so excited over Crossrail, High Speed 1 and High Speed 2. Personally, I believe that the billions of pounds involved would have been better spent giving the country a 21st Century railway network the entire nation would be proud of. Upgrading every inch of existing track...

Trivia: Scheduled passenger services that include a reversal.

Is there a list/table anywhere of normal scheduled services where a reversal is necessary at some point during the end to end journey? Would such reversals have been necessary prior to BR getting its butcher knife out in the 50's and Beeching in the 60's?

Are there any request stops on the Caledonian Sleeper?

I heard that Corrour was such a stop, northbound at least, but no indication of this on the National Rail website.

Mark 5/5A rolling stock wheel question

Is it just me or is there something a little unusual about the wheels on this brand new train compared to existing traction.

    Class 350/4 - TransPennine Express

So the top speed of these units is 110. The distance between Preston and Carlisle up the WCML is 85 miles. How is it the units can make this journey without being looped even once for a 125mph Pendolino to pass? When I'm standing on Harrow & Wealdstone station waiting for a Southern to East...

Unusual movements at Bowes Park Station

A Greater Anglia Class 90 and carriages comes sauntering along the northbound before parking up in the siding a few yards north of the station. Why would such a move take place and which route would it have taken to get onto the Hertford Loop? Freight train ambles past the southbound platform...

Train departure melodies played at stations in Japan.

Psychological studies found that buzzers and bells irritated passengers so these abrupt noises are being replaced with pleasant little 7-second melodies. Of course there have been complaints from those living close to open air stations hearing the same jingle over and over again from early...

A general question about driver training.

In the world outside of railways, a person wishing to embark on HGV training generally has to already possess an ordinary driving licence. If a potential TOC recruit is applying for a position as an "inter city" driver, does he/she first have to learn driving skills on smaller local trains or...

    The two Wakefield stations.

Westgate resembles any station with frequent long distant services whereas Kirkgate, much to my surprise resembles, aside from the long platforms, a sleepy country station with very few facilities. Is this a common situation in locations with two stations.

Long distance Advances available for early November on all TOC sites except ...

LNER. What's wrong with these guys? I can get up to Yorkshire for less than a score on Grand Central, Hull Trains and EMR in the second week of November. LNER must be losing hordes of Advance customers.

Correct procedure when travelling on outside Oyster validity.

Example: Purchasing a Feltham-Staines ticket at Waterloo to board a train for Staines. Touch in at Waterloo. Feltham is the Oyster border hence the additional ticket. Is one supposed to leave the train at Feltham to touch out or simply carry on. I am thinking of difficulty using the Oyster on...

Wow! My train arrived at destination 25 minutes early!

22:44 from Doncaster, due into King's Cross 01:05 actually coasted into the terminal station at 00:40. Is this typical for the last train of the night or was I just incredibly lucky?

Why can Grand Central do it but LNER can't (Advance ticket)

Advance ticket northbound from London King's Cross for 28th October. Grand Central give me a good price but LNER can't offer me anything. QUOTE Your travel date isn't available for sale just yet. UNQUOTE. Can Grand Central be relied upon to fulfill the contract?

Window alignment: can it be improved?

So some of Japan's trains have airline style windows lining up perfectly with the seating. Any reason why we can't have this?
