A dark day for British defence

Who wants to wager that MP's won't include themselves in the public sector cuts?

    Missing trains

To be fair, this didn't really occur (to the best of my knowledge or my experience) during the 2009 gala. Hopefully it won't occur in future ones!

    new S&DJR

To repeat a post that I posted in another thread here pertaining to the same subject: I, personally, think that opening the S&D being reopened throughout is unrealistic due to much of the formation having been lost to housing/industrial estates, roads, bypasses, and the removal of numerous...

    new S&DJR

Pretty much impossible to restore the whole line. Numerous bridges gone, housing/industrial estates on many parts of the former trackbed, supermarkets where stations once stood, cycle paths across parts of the old formation.... Certainly possible to restore select sections of it (as some...

    Your favourite journey(s)?

In all fairness, the title of the thread is 'Your favourite journey(s)' - a line doesn't have to be senic for it to be someone's favorite. To many it is/was the anticipation of what was at the destination, or perhaps the loco that peformed the duty, that made the journey a 'favorite'.

    My first railtour

My first Railtour was the DC Green Flasher on 17/07/1993. It featured the National Railway museum's E5001 (71001) but also included 56005 and a double-header from 73139 & 73141. Fantastic tour and the 71 performed admirably!

Stations you've used that are now closed

I can only think of one that counts in my books - the old Filton station, prior to it's replacement by Filton Abbey Wood station. Changed there once whilst doing some 1st Gen DMU bashing.

Things you would like to do again (even if impossible)

A semi-possible entry I guess, but my personal choice would be the 'Weymouth' back when it was hauled by a 37 & four or five mk2's, or mk1/mk2 mixture. Was always an amazing 'bash'. Will never forget standing on Oldfield Park station watching a growler appear from Bath Spa in the distance and...

    Class 60 Locomotives for sale.

I'd assume that the price would be determined by the overall condition of the specific loco. But as I said, just an assumption. And membership application/cheque for the 60 group sent!

    Things that annoy you

Captchas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha) I hate them. It took captchas just one or two years to become one of the worst online plagues. I want to comment on a blog or write into a guestbook, I want to log in somewhere or download something. I'm in a good temper, but suddenly a page comes...

    Early Railway Memories

Vauge recollection of almost-new HST's accelerating through Oldfield Park (Bath). Definitely recall sitting on the Dawlish sea wall watching BR blue Peaks, 47's 50's and HST's when on my holidays in my much younger years.

'Thomas the Tank Engine' for sale?

My son used to love the Thomas TV show too. I, however, am forced to agree with something that the Guardian once wrote about the series in general - " the stories only contain four basic plot lines: Troublesome Trucks, Proud Engine Gets His Comeuppance, Small Engine Shows His Worth, New Engine...

Are our railways haunted? (ghost stories)

There are pics from inside the tunnel on 28dayslater: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=51358 Though I do think that the photographer was stupid to get so close to the running lines in the active tunnel. Still, there are a few reports regarding said tunnels on that...

'Thomas the Tank Engine' for sale?

I remember reading that shortly after HIT took ownership of the rights a letter was recieved at Sheffield Park stating something to the tune of "we have been made aware that you are operating a locomotive which bears a copyrighted name from the Thomas franchise. Remove it or we'll take legal...

    London to Bude

A pity that the former Bude station is a housing estate now.

    Things that annoy you

Drivers who drive their cars at 40mph everywhere I always get stuck behind them - the road I use frequently is mostly National Speed Limit, but has one short 40 zone and one very short 30 zone. Yet you can guarantee getting stuck behid some fool who drives 40mph through the National Speed...

Agreed - that is a better description of them.

    Downgraded stations

Not absolutely certain it qualifies, as it did technically close (though small parts of the old platforms still exist) but will give mention to Birmingham Snow Hill. Definitely not the station it once was. I'd mention Seaton Junction too if not for the fact that it's out of use and has been...

    Downgraded stations

Pontypridd deserves a mention here. As does Newton Abbot.
