I wrote this late a night, so might not be too enthusitic about the route when in fact, the views in parts were great.
As for the 554, I fell asleep for a good chunk of the route. I do like the 554 as its handy to get to Carlisle without going via Penrith. The lesser spotted 553 is a good trip too.
Last weekend I took the 888 from Newcastle to Keswick. I have been wanting to do this route for a long time. Living north of the border, the times made it a bit of challenge to get to Newcastle for 9am.

There is always the coach traveller that wont travel by train due to cost. I have noticed they have been combining routes such as the 032 going into Heathrow.
There is still a gap for a daytime service from Edinburgh via Manchester.
A fair few of the services post covid that were brought back or new don't seem to last like the 184 from Edinburgh to Liverpool or Bournemouth to Gatwick 206.
Surprised the NX Kent services are holding on, mind there is no Flixbus down there.

I noticed when I used TVM to buy a Wigan to Preston, it spat out a seat reservation, I didnt even go to my reserved seat.
Quite often I just go to the unreserved carriage.
SWR have no seat reservations even on the long routes, people seem to cope.
How are forum members finding prices in the USA? I was hoping to go over in a few months but rates even at the lower end are pretty high. I guess that's down to exchange rate.
One minor issue with Premier Inn up near the station, was no shop or somewhere to get something to eat early doors. My fault for getting out at 6am though!
