Probably due to the stoppers being funded by South Yorkshire PTE in the East, and Greater Manchester PTE in the West.
ISTR GMPTE stoppers turned back at New Mills (although most stations could be served by trains to Rose Hill.

How about an example of a one coach loco-hauled service.
Back in the early 1980, the 1710 Perth-Arbroath could sometimes be a single Type 2/Type 3 with a single Mk1 BSO.
See http://www.railrover.co.uk/memories.php#partthree for more details of this working.

A 1981 summer Saturday in Scarborough would produce the following:
Quiet before 0900 with a few DMUs to/from York and Hull. One of note is the 0843 Scarborough - Manchester Picc via Hull, arriving at Piccadilly at 1318. That sounds like a long run in a DMU!
Then we have:

Regarding Dav1954's mention of a BNS-Weston DMU turn, as late as 1981 we had a 1V65, 0858SO Birmingham - Weston, calling Cheltenham, Bristol TM and Weston, arriving 11:15. Note that it was non stop through Parkway, and used the Gloucester Avoider - wouldn't have been an issue calling at...
Just been looking up the 1981 timetable (courtesy of 'Hellfire') and I have the 1322 ex Norwich calling at Nuneaton 1641/1643. We also have a 1602 Birmingham NS - Lincoln St Marks coming the other way, calling at Nuneaton 1637/1639.
Maybe the stop was an unadvertised one, or maybe there...
When on a Freedom of Scotland rover ticket, this was probably the best change of decent overnight sleep. Starting at Carlisle on 1S81 (departing at 2050) you would end up in Inverness after a great deal of Mk1. steam heat and type 2 haulage.
Fantastic days.
See...
As late as 1981 there was a direct Glasgow - Morecambe service, direct via the Hest Bank - Bare Lane curve (not via Lancaster as I originally stated). Was a candidate for a pair of Type 2's throughout.

Max speed of WCML sleepers in the early 1980s was 70mph (because the state of the track would be pretty uncomfortable if you were trying to get some sleep in a MK 1 coach).
Also this allowed for the ability to make up time if required (as the WCML was very busy during the night - the section...
Hi 45041,
Yes - I am now much less remote (working in Perth, Australia), so I can now respond to emails much faster than previously!
I hope to press on with the rewrite of the new version, and am still hoping to get a 1973 version off the ground!
Cheers

We are aware of an issue with emails from the Forum to Microsoft-based email accounts (hotmail/outlook/live.com email addresses). This is being looked into currently, thanks for your patience meanwhile.
