Are there any strike days in September.

Thanks, I'd forgotten RMT members at SWR were striking! I'll go ahead and book the coach.

Are there any strike days in September.

Does it look like SWR staff will be going on strike soon? I'm heading off to London in September to get the Eurostar and am wondering if I should book the National Express coach from Winchester to London instead (unless National Express staff announce industrial action)

Future of SWR's class 158/159 fleet

Unfortunately they're not so well looked after under SWR. Air conditioning fails far more than it used to prior to 2017.

Future of SWR's class 158/159 fleet

I've read in the most recent edition of RAIL that replacement of the 158/159 fleet isn't mentioned in the SWR business plan, even though these trains are 30 years old. Realistically, what is the future for them? Another refurbishment? I suspect a like-for-like replacement (with new DMUs) won't...

What level of antisocial behaviour exists on your tram network?

I've heard of a 15-year-old boy being mugged on a tram between Croydon and Wimbledon back in the mid 2000s. Apparently muggings and ASB were rife along the Croydon Tramlink. Not sure what it's like now. In 2006 I was on a tram heading to Wimbledon when a group of RPIs boarded at Dundonald Road...

    Check-in times for Eurostar

Myself and a group of friends will be travelling from St Pancras to Brussels on Saturday 10 September on the 1506 train. Myself and one other friend will be returning on Sunday 25 September on the 1256 Eurostar from Brussels to London. We will be travelling on the 0942 service from Cologne on...

Abandoned wagons and rolling stock on the network

I don't know if it's still there but there used to be a ballast hopper and a guards van parked in a siding near Ryde St Johns station on the Isle of Wight. I think they've been there since the early 1990s.

Interrail plan - would love to know your thoughts

Thanks for your replies everyone! My personal preference would be staying in Lindau. I've discovered there is a direct train from Koln to Lindau (IC119 Bodensee), which runs via Stuttgart and Ulm Alternatively, another option is to take the direct service (IC2005) from Koln to Konstanz, before...

Yes - I'm thinking a day in Bodensee could be spent doing things like that

CAF class 197 Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

Two cars won't be enough during bank holidays and in the summer.

Phone speaker noise on trains - have we given up completely?

It's even more dangerous to confront people over ASB now that carrying knives and other weapons has become increasingly common. In 2006 AFAIK a man was stabbed to death on the top deck of a bus in London after asking a man to stop throwing chips at his partner. From what I've seen on social...

CAF class 197 Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

Apologies if this has already been discussed earlier in the thread but will these units be doubled up on Manchester to West Wales services? Three cars won't be enough on most services. Is there an option for TfW to order additional centre cars if necessary?

Interrail plan - would love to know your thoughts

Mods: please feel free to merge this with the previous thread I started. I'm going on an interrail trip with three friends in September for a fortnight. I would appreciate your thoughts on it, and whether I'm cramming in too much into a fortnight. I've followed two routes listed in the latest...

Trip to Lake Constance Autumn 2022

Thanks, I've read the 17th edition of Europe by Rail which recommends travelling on EC163 which runs along the more scenic Giselabahn from Worgle to Schwarzach-St Veit. Hopefully when we're travelling that particular train won't have been diverted. Thanks - I've passed through Zurich before...

Trip to Lake Constance Autumn 2022

Thanks - I've considered staying there but getting from there to our next destination (Salzburg) will be problematic. DB's online journey planner suggests that the most direct route is via St Gallen and Munich. Unfortunately, the day of departure happens to be the second day of Oktoberfest, so...

Trip to Lake Constance Autumn 2022

Evening all, As part of an interrail trip in the autumn of this year, I will be spending three nights in Lake Constance with three friends. At the moment, we haven't decided where to stay. I've heard that accommodation prices on the German side of the lake are lower than in towns on the Swiss...

    Quer-durchs-land ticket validity to Plzen

Thanks for your replies everyone. I've subsequently found there is a flixbus service from Friedrichshafen to Munich. I'll be travelling in a group of people with luggage so they might prefer to travel by coach, especially as the EC service from Lindau to Munich only runs once every two hours.

    Quer-durchs-land ticket validity to Plzen

Good evening, I'm planning a trip from Friedrichshafen to Prague via Munich. My plan is to purchase a Quer-durchs-land ticket for travel as far as the Czech border and then purchase another ticket for travel to Prague. The article on the Munich to Prague services on seat61...
