    Arriva (Beds, Bucks, Herts)

The 55 from Stevenage to Letchworth will also be reduced to hourly on Saturdays from November which reduces the services calling at Lister Hospital. Not sure if this is due to the recently introduced 92 service from Baldock to Stevenage. https://www.intalink.org.uk/november-2025

    RMT industrial action 5th - 12 September 2025

For that journey I would walk from Waterloo to Blackfriars southern entrance for a Thameslink service.

    Budget hotels discussion

Which is the best hotel close to Milton Keynes station? The Premier Inn s nearby and there is also a Leonardo with similar prices. Would be for room only as I would be walking to the station to catch a railtour from MK so eating breakfast on the train. Thanks.

    unprofessional onboard announcements

I was on a GWR service from Paddington earlier this week. The person doing the catering announcement shortly after departure was in giggles for most of it and there seemed to be a lot of giggling in the background. So most of the announcement was completely incomprehensible.

    Is your bank annoying you?

A couple of banks (including Halifax) keep sending letters each month relating to my late Father’s accounts requesting me to send them a copy of the grant of probate. Based on recent experiences of a couple of friends I don’t expect to get the probate grant until next year. It doesn’t help...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

I found a couple of these recently that my father would have requested in the early 1980s. They had preprinted pages stapled together to make a complete route. I remember navigating using the later versions which were bespoke printed routes.

Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

Marks and Spencer had “new improved fit” stickers on some of their shirts a few years ago. Anything with those stickers did not fit me at all despite being supposedly the same size as ones that did fit !

    Remarkable hunting oscillation

I find the GN 387s can be quite lively on the down fast between New Southgate and Potters Bar. On The 379s it is still detectable but much smoother than the 387s.

Are premium bonds a good investment?

I have won a few prizes, generally £25 but had a couple of £100 prizes last year. My father invested £11 in 1956 and has never won anything. Those bonds are still worth £11.

GWR weekend 1st available on Cotswold line?

I will be travelling from Great Malvern to Paddington next Sunday, Is weekend 1st upgrade available on this route or would I be better off trying a Seatfrog upgrade? Is there likely to be space in 1st? I will be splitting tickets at Worcester as using Network card discount from Worcester. Thanks

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Holding the service on the flyover would not work unless it is running very late as the Brighton-Cambridge service isn’t far behind - it is usually leaving Stevenage as the Kings Lynn train passes it. The Kings Lynn train would also then be potentially delayed depending what southbound services...

Hitchin to Stotfold Rd down line

I was out for a walk yesterday afternoon and saw a 12 coach 700 waiting at Hitchin East junction for a Kings Lynn service coming on the old route to pass. I assume the Kings Lynn service was a few minutes late. The 700 would have been a Brighton to Cambridge service. The stopper appeared a few...

Lack of train crew on Great Northern?

I have noticed that the departure screens on the platform at Letchworth are showing the Kings Lynn service when the terminating service arrives. I was on 1L48 today. When I alighted at Letchworth several people on the platform were beginning to board at one of the other doors. Others were...

2025 fares from 2 March 2025 now in journey planners

I see that GTR are now promoting advance single fares from Cambridge to Kings Cross/ St Pancras. They look to be only available at weekends. The fares I saw in the journey planner were either £11 or £11.40 They don’t seem to be available from other GN stations on the route. (I checked Ely...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

Our convenience store also sells papers and Magazines that can be ordered for collection or home delivery so they should also be able to obtain the specialist titles. It used to be McColls but is now a Morrisons local. The large Morrisons also stocks a wide range of Magazines. I have found the...
