London to Berwick-Upon-Tweed - any way of getting this cheaper?

If they were doing it earlier in the day Id have recomended a hybrid coach/ train journey. Coach to Sheffield/Meadowhall preferably from Finchley Rd/Golders green and then by train to Berwick on the days the OP wants to travel £70 return is possible, but an 18.00 departure from London is too...

Heritage Railways - Making a Success of a Main Line Connection

Its probably to do with the fact that Bishop Auckland is a single platform at the end of a single track branch from Darlington that gets 150, 000 passengers a year. Wheras Epping is the end of a double track line from Central London that serves 3,200,000 passengers pa.

London to Berwick-Upon-Tweed - any way of getting this cheaper?

For Berwick Id have flown to Edinburgh and hired a car for the weekend (Easyjet/Ryan Air £200/230) from Stansted with coach from Strattford and VW POLO, large cabin bag included. Have to add fuel for the 65 miles each eay to Berwick

    LNER Amex Deals

Surely TOCs can offset TOD charges since they are coming back in to the business anyway. Ok in this case it's being paid to GWR but that must be swings and roundabouts.

Heritage Railways - Making a Success of a Main Line Connection

By a coiincidence its the 10th Anniversary of our diy mainline connection at Robertsbridge this week for the RVR and K&ESR. Hopefully it'll be getting a lot more use in 2028

    Off peak/peak v Advance

I have only left a plane before it reached its destination (near Honiton) three times, on the first occasion it required a Royal Marines boot to take the decision out of my hands. Im glad he did because in hindsight Id have felt a bit stupid arriving at the destination. I bravely tried another...

    Sligo to Todmorden SailRail

How Long are you in Sligo for? Ive never been to Sligo but Ive twice sucessfully bought them at Galway the day before travel. In both cases I was staying on the Aran Islands and I didnt want to book the journey in case bad weather delayed the ferry. In both cases Galway Ticket Office were very...

LNER are of course a wholly owned subsidiary of DFT Operator Ltd and have been so for many years now.

    Sligo to Todmorden SailRail

Ive worked in Portsmouth International Port, the average number of footpassengers per sailing is something like 7. They have a 10 seater minibus/ ambulance for foot passengers and thats adequate for the majority of sailings/ arrivals, sometimes it makes 2 trips. There was probably a reasonable...

    Off peak/peak v Advance

Yes you are quite correct, I should have said GTR + SE = LNER+ AWC+1/2 GWR

Heritage Railways - Making a Success of a Main Line Connection

The NYMR is also very much a special case because the part of the national network it runs onto is a slow speed single track deadend branchline with no signalling and which runs on a now obsolete remote operated token system. Even so the NYMR is now restricting its operation to 25 mph and no...

Tunbridge Wells - Charing X Saturday service

These trains are only full between London Bridge and Orpington it is pretty normal loading for the southeast to have to stand for 17 mins these are the slow Hastings trains. If you look at the Semi Fast hastings trains at xx 15 which dont stop at orpington these never go above half full.

    Off peak/peak v Advance

GTRs revenue is roughly equivalent to LNER+AWC+1/2GWR so most people would discount Intercity revenue as not significant.

Heritage Railways - Making a Success of a Main Line Connection

Most of the heritage railway connections are freight connections that arent signalled for passenger movements. they can be used as a passenger connection a few times a year but this requires extra staff on the ground to control the movements, clip points etc.

Brighton Belle On Test - 2025 onwards

Not Often as I undertstand the plans but there are other Sussex Stations which have spare capacity away from the Brighton Line and theres a number of 3rd rail circuits that are available from Victoria P!. 1741550654 I think that south of balcombe Tunnel Junction the Brighton Line now has 2...

Swanage Railway recruiting a Chief Executive

I have no knowledge of the Swanage's catering attempts but its more likely a result of legislation than "volunteers not wanting to cook". I've often covered as a catering assistant at the K&ESR and as such I sell prepacked sandwiches, buns and drinks. However to prepare meals I need a health &...

Swanage Railway recruiting a Chief Executive

I don't think any of the "various people "are in the heritage or mainline railway circles, I get the impression that the results were such it's been put to bed for at least a generation and lives on mostly in enthusiasts social media. I think it's been filed in the same.folder as through/...

    GWR PAYG

Ive been using Keygo since shortly after it was introduced without any problems. My only disappointment is that its still not been extended to Portsmouth or Ashford despite Southern promising it would be extended in a couple of months many years ago.

Tunbridge Wells - Charing X Saturday service

I think its generally the case with the Kent Mainlines that the return in the afternoon/evening is more spread out than the journey up to town in the morning. Theres four trains an hour at Tonbridge which on a saturday has ample parking a mile off the A21 expressway. Tunbridge Wells centre by...

The Push and Pull - Branch Line Society - Thursday 3rd April 2025

Cant help but feel this is like the useless WTLP range for EVs (possibly even worse!). What is its range with the heating on and the doors opening and closing in passenger seervice?
