    Leeds station improvement updates

If it were to happen, would this hypothetical footbridge need lifts? All platforms currently have step free access from the eastern footbridge, as mentioned already. Putting in additional lifts on each platform feels like a waste. I'm assuming at this point that the new bridge would be just to...

    Ashville new siding

I agree, although from the video it sounds like the railhead part of the business is continuing.

    CrossCountry's Driver Shortage

Thanks to those who answered. From the answers, it sounds like ASLEF could have blocked XC from taking on and training more drivers, but haven't chosen to. I was assuming they would, to give themselves more leverage in negotiations.

    CrossCountry's Driver Shortage

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before, but... Is there anything (excluding an XC management decision not to) preventing XC from hiring more drivers? Are there limits imposed by DFT, or agreements made with the unions to limit the number of drivers? I honestly don't know, and was...

Two additional tracks to be built into Leeds station from the West?

Well, I haven't done a full cost-benefit analysis, I have to admit. 10 mins walk? That would be pushing it. I'd say 15 myself. Especially with bags, buggies etc. A big part of the social benefit would be the unlocking of this whole area for regeneration. You've also got the integrated public...

Two additional tracks to be built into Leeds station from the West?

I think I saw on a previous thread that this viaduct has been assessed as not capable of withstanding train loads any more, due to its condition. (I don't know the details.) That puts it further away from the parts that it would be serving, namely the bus station, market, area around the...

Two additional tracks to be built into Leeds station from the West?

The land for the station at Quarry Hill (my suggestion)... (Obviously I realise that this is not without disruption, but I think that this would be worth it.) The Wetherby and Kippax lines were a bit tongue in cheek, at least at the moment. I would also add Allerton Bywater and Great Preston...

Two additional tracks to be built into Leeds station from the West?

My two penneth... West of Leeds. I hadn't heard of those two extra tracks being seriously proposed recently, but am definitely for that idea. My only gripe is why not 4 extra instead of 2! With regard to the Princes Exchange building being sold to NR. I know that Regus (the serviced office...

    Border protocols at "Schengen" borders

Just to add another data point... I took the Eurostar to Brussels and then ICE from Brussels to Cologne last Friday. (Back in Blighty now.) No checks, other than the usual ticket check.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Could you (or someone else) explain what the difference is, please? I don't know huge amounts about OLE, but like to learn these things. Thank you!

Lichfield - Burton reopening commissioned reports and appraisals

Instead of? I'd prefer not. Sutton Coldfield wouldn't benefit from those connections I mentioned above. As well as? I'd prefer that. You could have 1 TPH going via Sutton Coldfield plus 1 TPH going via Walsall and Brownhills. Obviously both of those could increase as demand requires.

Lichfield - Burton reopening commissioned reports and appraisals

I would have thought that it's not just about those trips. You also have all points north/east of Burton: Derby, Nottingham, etc. Yes, you can go via Brum, but it's a long way round on a commute. You can also change at Tamworth, assuming XC have deigned to call there at the time. There isn't a...

Terminating trains at platform 6 at Sheffield

Many thanks for your response. Is there any reason why it was designed that way? (Just wondering.)

    Manchester United’s rail freight dilemma

I would have it closer than (I think) you're suggesting. Basically I would have the platforms as the yellow rectangles shown below. This would put it approx 1/4 mile from the edge of the Salford Quays area. (To be clear, I'm talking a National Rail connection rather than a Metrolink one.)...

    Manchester United’s rail freight dilemma

I would argue that Salford Quays is close enough that a station at Old Trafford would see commuter traffic from there during the week. Especially from passengers from Warrington (and beyond) who wouldn't need to travel to Deansgate and then walk / tram it out of the city again. As far as the...

Near miss at Euxton Junction (14/03/24)

I know that signs have been put at track access points in a lot of places, to help avoid this kind disorientation. I don't know if some of these signs could be repeated more often, eg on bridge abutment or retaining walls. It feels like a fairly low cost partial solution. I also wonder what the...

Sheffield Supertram - potential extension suggestions

https://www.newcivilengineer.com/latest/south-yorkshire-exploring-possibilities-of-supertram-network-extension-12-04-2024/ As the article linked to above states, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority are exploring possible extensions. Which ones would you go for? A few are mentioned in...

DB considers London service once again

I didn't know that. I haven't used Eurostar in a while. (I'll be using it next month, though.) Thanks for the information. So essentially my idea would just be an extension of that.

St Pancras International Departure Hall - One potential solution for overcrowding

I'm definitely not suggesting taking out the top-end wine bar, or anything on the platform level. I am suggesting taking out retail on the east side of the concourse at the lower level. This would help create the space for the conversion described above. I would also do the same on the north...

St Pancras International Departure Hall - One potential solution for overcrowding

There would be a separate queue system, check in and security for these passengers, all of which would be on the south side of the passageway to KX. (Whether it be a different TOC, or a different class of ticket.)
