Surely the driver has not completed his/her checks properly and the passenger would be justified in obstructing those doors. I note that on the Paris metro they seem to use that alarm as a message to hurry up while people are still boarding but it seems rare on a proper train in the UK.

True, but I guess they are responding to the competition rather than being altruistic. Between London and South Yorkshire, many options: - VTEC - Hull Trains - Grand Central - EMT - LM via Tamworth - Megatrain (Sheffield) - Megabus+ (Doncaster)

What with free wifi, Power Hour to Doncaster, and this; VTEC is really powering ahead of the competition on this route and the Midland Mainline.

That's shocking - surely allowing passengers to travel by replacement bus wouldn't detract from the point being made by strikers.

Thanks for everyone's help. What I have learnt from this is that delay compensation should form a part of my decisions in future about which TOCs to use for my journeys. While I may not have a valid claim this time, next time I should aim to travel with GWR and XC as their delay repay scheme...

Thank you for checking this, I wish I'd known that at the time. It sounds like I chose the right route but didn't need to hang around waiting for the disruption to clear. Is it easy to check what my journey time would have been if I'd tried to go from Waterloo at 1600?!

My knowledge about alternative routes in this area isn't too good and the TOCs' Twitter feeds didn't seem to offer much other than travelling the next day or going via Westbury (?!). I was concerned about severe overcrowding at Waterloo and Basingstoke (based on Twitter) so it seemed reasonable...

In the Lille ticket machines, a weekend walk-up undiscounted TGV ticket to Bruxelles is €30. On the sncf website, it's €19 for a ticket which seems to have no restrictions other than weekend only. Does this seem correct or have I missed something?

The point of the TGV on this route is the very high speeds on the Marseille to Paris section, so you may just as well take the TER for Nice to Marseille, although it can get busy.
