Nothing is easy but it is the simplest solution - and I think your suggestions would work. No point in doing unless you make it 12-car as you would need to still join trains up at Redhill otherwise.
Have you looked at recent passenger numbers on the extensions. They are very low. The stations...
The best improvement would be to sort out the platforms at Reigate so a 12-car train can reverse in platform 1, so the Reigate to Victoria services can be 8-car during the off peak with busiest services extended to 12 in the peak. (Currently they reverse in Platform 2 which is limited to 4-car...
Noticed something similar on the 9R/9J services, Bedford to Three Bridges/Horsham on a Sunday. Early and late trains are 12 car but through the day it is mostly 8-car.
Not aware of any loading issues because it is an 8-car rather than 12 car but just interesting.
As said to fit GW train in platform
Platform 1 is only a 9-coach platform - length was reduced in rebuilding to fit platform zero in, due to need to put points in original platform length.
Still a pain but only about 7 coaches worth
Have to say I'd wish I could travel on the same services as you as my experience (without detailed records) feels more like the previous poster.
Whilst I'd agree that the biggest reason of problems on 9J (PBO to HOR) could be drivers, along the Redhill route the biggest reason is the constant...
As I said in an earlier post it hasn't been designed or built to allow it to happen, so it will not.
However, speculating if it had been built, if from Redhill then trains could start in both directions, some to Peterborough and some to Horsham with the Horsham trains eventually running through...
You obviously haven't been dropped off at East Croydon with a hundred other people much. Looking at the stop shorts on RecentTrainTimes it's happened about 7-8 times in last 4 weeks, whereas Redhill has been skipped 50+ times (probably more but I got bored going back assessing individual...
Great stuff - that's about 1,000 extra steps
Along with the 9R's Bedford to Three Bridges, which are the only trains to call at Earlswood and Salfords meaning massive gaps in service as the only possible replacement is the 9J Peterborough to Horsham, which has too short a turnround at Horsham...
It's been appalling for over a week now. Long gaps in services to Redhill with a lot of catch up non-stop to Gatwick and vice versa to East Croydon. 9R's (Bedford to Three Bridges) withdrawn for most of the day - Earlswood and Salfords with multiple hour gaps in services as 9J's (Peterborough to...
Very Similar from Reigate, where first off-peak service to London is now the 10:02 instead of the 08:58, capturing mostly families and less well off into higher fares. Similarly, a lot of well used evening trains are no longer available with off-peak.
Agree, and if I remember correctly, it was a 10-minute increase in journey from Reading to Gatwick, not a massive penalty on 80-minute journey for two evenly spaced trains per hour rather than just one.
Because it's a good idea!
Having trains at regular half hourly intervals is much more convenient for passengers on local services (hourly at smaller stations). Local travel is much larger % of passengers than Reading to Gatwick passengers
