You could contact northern rail (I presume that's whos train it was left on) or try lime streets lost property office on 0151 707 8594 which is most probably where it will have ended up if it was handed in.
I think the ship thy're on is a ro-ro / container ship so that shouldnt happen!

As previously mentioned most 14x/15x units have these signs although I think quite a few people completely ignore them, you only have to look at the sleepers,ballast in stations. Ew!

I am wanting to go to Leeds station to do some 'spotting' in the near future. My question is what are staff like about people 'spotting' at the end of the platform, are they ok with it or do they tell you to move off the station?

Yes you did see 73 138 apparently it failed the day before and was then left there for rvel to repair as it wouldn't start (according to http://www.wnxx.com/news/index.htm anyway)
