Major Engineering Work Planned at Clifton (Cumbria) to Replace WestCoast Mainline Bridge Over M6 - Jan 2026

I seem to remember there being various restrictions on the Carlisle/Wreay bridge of similar construction over the M6 in the 1980s when I lived up there due to structural issues. Was that every replaced/repaired? Still restricted to 85 I think.

    Design your own open-access operator

Had an idea, but looking here a few have come up with something similar - Glasgow - Carlisle - Skipton - Keighley - Shipley - Leeds - Wakefield Kirkgate - Barnsley- Sheffield - Chesterfield - Derby - Leicester - Bedford - Luton - Luton Airport - London St Pancras Opens up Glasgow to Leeds and...

What were the Virgin Trains Class 158s like?

Virgin dropped the 158s very quickly upon taking over as they didn't feel they were an Inter City appropriate product. Made no effort to brand the few they operated.

    Class 175s to GWR

Would have a little more time for that if it was a) readable and b) they could spell Paignton (Paington!)

    Club Avanti

I’ve ended up letting a standard premium journey reward expire - live in Chester and there is no SP on the Evero/Voyagers. Would have taken a free journey in standard, but can’t retro fit it to that apparently.

    RMT Strike (Avanti) February

Lnwr will operate to Crewe and then depending on your ticket tfw to Chester or lnwr again to Liverpool. Remember this is only (currently) affecting Avanti. Ticket acceptance for advances will be highly likely, or refund and buy new tickets - lnwr offer some stupidly cheap tickets to Crewe.

    Storm Darragh - 6/7th Dec

Operational issues aside - not claiming trains should be run if the route hasn’t been proved and confirmed operationally in order - national rail’s app has all trains bar the shuttle into Holyhead as being cancelled due to “forecasted high winds” on the North Wales coast. Obviously that’s...

Blackpool North Part Two - a new dawn or false hope?

Maybe it’s a Blackpool thing. Was there a few years ago (21) and caught a tram from the pleasure beach to the tower with the family. Tried to pay contactless - grumpy git told me the card machine wasn’t working and that if we couldn’t pay cash we’d have to get off at the next stop. Didn’t have...

    TOC football charters

Recall the Carlisle Area Manager putting on a special for United fans to get to Wembley for the final of the Auto Windscreens Final against Birmingham on Sunday 23rd April 1995. I'm not a Carlisle fan, but was in Penrith at the time and took the train down to the game as I had never been to...

Trivia: Unusual / Interesting Calling Patterns?

Thanks all. Utterly random services! Even down to the 2212 ex Edinburgh not going to the Airport on a Wednesday, but doing so for the rest of the week, and yes it was the 2101 from Glasgow to Preston which called at Penrith (2257) which ran non stop to Preston, and not the later Edinburgh to...

Trivia: Unusual / Interesting Calling Patterns?

I seem to recall there was a random short lived late night southbound TPE service which I think came in for the December 2019 timetable which called at Penrith around midnight heading south from Scotland to Manchester (Airport?). Ran non stop to Preston from there presumedly as Oxenholme and...

Hotel bedrooms overlooking busy railway stations

Urban Loft hotel in Cologne is fantastic - views back to the station and cathedral. Trains literally right outside the window. View from room 232 and of the hotel from the train. There is a roof terrace as well, just visible in the second pic.

    Class 175s to GWR

I’m guessing the 175 knockers haven’t ridden in these units. Much better than an IET and my personal view from their former territory in Chester is that they are far superior to a 197 both in ride and comfort. Still can’t believe TfW took them out of service with so long left on their lease...

Avanti N Wales up the Swannee again 16th Oct

Customer stranded at Crewe has just tweeted Avanti to say still no buses to north wales at midnight. Assume they arrived on the delayed 2002 from Euston which terminated at Crewe due to the flooding. Why couldn’t the service have carried on to Warrington Bank Quay and reversed via Helsby? This...

    Public perception of railways

I’m a big fan of the railways and will always defend them where I can, and when they work they often work well, but when things go wrong there is no perception of a plan to the customer and that’s where it falls apart. I appreciate that when something happens the first thing the control teams...

    Empire Builder - Amtrak

Apologies if I have missed a thread on this already, but couldn't see one Considering booking this is either January of February for myself and my wife. Initial thought was to jump on at one end and do the whole 48 hours in one go, but wondered if anyone had suggestions as to which...

    Design your own open-access operator

Anything at all to complete with XC. Those trains are full, wildly expensive and frankly rubbish. Given Labour is giving OA the green light I can see a core service even of a couple of services a day doing very well on the Glasgow Central (WCML)/ Newcastle (ECML) via Birmingham to...

Annual All-Lines Pass: could it ever work?

An all line annual UK ticket wouldn't be used every week of the year, so you can't just take a price of any given weekly rover and multiply it by 52. Punters buying a week rover would plan to make the most of it, but those on a year pass couldn't take every week off (or if you were off every...

    Class 175 future speculation

175111 was in a bit of a state at longsight minus various parts (coupler for one!) and seems to have been put back together, so I’m guessing the plan is definitely all 27 rather than some going as spares. Living in Chester I’d rather a 175 than a rough riding uncomfortable 197 all day long, but...
