    Tragic incident in Glasgow

You have to bare in mind where they go to tip the rubbish once its collected, landfill sites etc and make shift roads are the norm, its a rough environment and tough old job they do and all that compacting stuff they carry is heavy, they have to be well built. Very sad incident for all...

FGW rail replacement bus hit by lorry

Agreed, if it had been a private hire coach with OAPs on a day out or school children or a National express coach then it would have been described as such. Its only made it onto rail forums as it was a rail replacement bus..... if it had been one of the above I doubt anyone on this forum...

FGW rail replacement bus hit by lorry

I can't see in ANY of the reports where it says its a 'passenger' who is/isn't in a serious condition....... it just says a 'patient'.

Britain unable to patrol territorial waters without help from NATO

Now ive been reading this thread and been thinking the same thing..... what/who is threatening the UK exactly, if a Russian sub was off the coast of Scotland then so what? I really do fail to see who would benefit if the whole of the UK was wiped off the face of the earth?

Single Container Wagon at Milton Keynes Today

I believe they have a truck with a hiab to do just this kind of job at Southampton Maritime.

Single Container Wagon at Milton Keynes Today

Yes they do get punctures....... but they are fixed there and then. Yes they do break down.......... but they get fixed there and then. (in neither case does the container get left behind) If a truck rolls over, the load is written off, as it would be on a train. And as for congestion...

Single Container Wagon at Milton Keynes Today

Meanwhile somebody at Maersk is picking up the phone to a client and saying... 'were ever so sorry your container isn't with you, its stuck on a broken wagon at Milton Keynes'...... 'no sorry we have no idea when it will arrive'..... 'yes we are sorry, next time we'll put it on a truck which...

Put the freight on to the rails

And the main reason for that is people want there goods delivered to their door/premises...... not a rail yard the other side of town!

Should we reduce railfreight on crowded lines?

I was comparing like for like, but ok, have it your way, 35 wagons means roughly 35 40ft boxes, and 35 20ft boxes which can be carried by roughly 55 HGVs, the space on the road taken by 55 HGVs will still be less if everyone from a 2+9 HST used their cars. Lets x2, 2 trains worth of...

Should we reduce railfreight on crowded lines?

lol, that's exactly what I thought. Can somebody just help me with some rough calculations, on a typical HST 2+9 formation, how many passengers can that convey? On a fully loaded intermodal of the same length (11 wagons) that would be 11 40ft boxes and 11 20ft boxes, that could...

Put the freight on to the rails

It would make absolutely sod all difference! All the cars would be sat in exactly the same jams..... they'd just be sat there looking for somebody else to blame...... maybe buses, or tractors, or vans, or cyclists.... anyone but themselves!

Put the freight on to the rails

Philippa Edmunds, 'Freight on Rail Campaigner', 'Campaign for Better Transport' said..... ....said the usual bo77ocks that comes from these people, maybe they should go away and do the same calculations for freight trains? No don't be silly, won't do that will they.

Put the freight on to the rails

Do you want to stop and think about what you've just said? Do you think hauliers run trucks up and down the country just for the pure fun of it? --- old post above --- --- new post below --- I think the only thing that threads like this demonstrate with any certainty is that 99% of people...

    Freightliner 70s

I believe the 56 is just for shunting. The Colas 70 (70803) that was on hire was just to cover for Freightliner 70s while they went to Loughborough for mods.

Multi Modal Interview Assessment Day 2

Erm yes.... and HGVs, but I wouldn't count the car test, I think it was one lesson a week for a few hours.... I can't remember over how long. Even my HGV1 was done in under a week.
