I have an off-peak return from Huddersfield to Burnage. On the outward journey would I be allowed to take the train to Levenshulme and walk to Burnage from there? The price to both stations is the same.

Yes of course it is entirely reasonable. The new train crew have not seen any of the passengers before and cannot know whether they have tickets/Railcards. But maybe traincrew starting at LDS, upon seeing a ticket Newcastle > Liverpool could reasonably be expected to assume the railcard has...

But, a newly boarded ticket inspector, should realise that Railcards will have been shown before on tickets. Common sense.
