While I am not arguing about the timings - it would be more comfortable on a single train from Ally Pally to Letchworth that a bus and train. Also it does provide extra network capacity (when there are events) on a train which is already going to Letchworth Depot as an ECS movement after...
A few ideas I have using ECS services to increase connectivity:
1) Extending the London to Lincoln LNER service to "Gainsborough Lea Road" on the morning and evening service which is an ECS to Doncaster.
2) Extending the early morning and evening Stevenage to Moorgate/KGX service (via Hertford...
A stop at Huntington or St Neots wouldn't go a miss in that case. Considering the delay at Sandy, a stop at either of these or even Sandy would be fabulous.
Sandy is the furthest station north on the ECML to only be served by a Thameslink in the peaks - so a faster service would go down well.
But the key point is that Wellingborough's prices are very steep vs other places of a similar distance to London e.g. Northampton and St Neots/Huntingdon and for that premium we should be entitled to a IC style train or have a fare reduction noting the reduction in standards.
Why could we not have Class 801's? The citizens of Wellingborough are paying IC prices to get a service with 3+2 seating and no on-board catering facilities.
Would there be any value in re-opening the branch line off Winslow to Buckingham? It is only 4ish miles and it could be used as a shuttle to and from MK, Winslow (A shuttle should achieve 3tph) or Oxford. Also as extended peak-time extended services from Marylebone to Aylesbury.
Moreover it...
Actually the GN peak fasts I am talking about do run on the fasts all the way to Peterborough (They use the middle aisle platforms at Biggleswade and St Neots). Only the semi-fast takes the slow line after Woolmer Green, so it would be a lot more than 9 miles of 125mph running after Hitchin.
I have always maintained that these should be used to replace the peak GN services on the ECML (KXG to Biggleswade, St Neots, Huntingdon and Peterborough).
Currently operated by class 365's that are limited to 100mph on the fasts which could be better utilised by the Class 91's.
Whilst I...
I wouldn't mind a later service between Grantham and Nottingham around 11pm ish to cater for commuters coming from London via KGX. As the last connection at 9:50pm to Nottingham only gives you 5 mins leeway for any delays on the LNER connection.
I do think the demand sufficient for improved connections from the likes of Nottingham, Leicester to Sheffield and Leeds. An hourly extension to Leeds would provide this.
I think this has got rather lost but with my suggestion, no extra paths would be taken. What I proposed was using the 91/Mk4 or 800s to replace the current 365s on the GN fast KX to P'boro using ECML existing paths with an possible extension to Melton or Spalding (where paths are available).
I disagree with your point that using the car would be quicker, considering the fact that it takes circa 25 mins from Melton to Stamford covering 24 miles and considering the distance from Melton to Notts via Cotgrave would be just over 20 miles, I cant see how we wouldn't have a Melton to Notts...
I'm not quite sure why this has received a negative response, a link to the cotgrave branch from the old Melton line would massively reduce journey times from Melton and Oakham to Nottingham (around 50 mins currently). Demand from Melton is there for a direct Nottingham service and would...
Ignore the duplicate thread, as I wasn't able to access this one, but whilst I can see your points that a class 91 maybe would not work.
I do like the idea of a peak time (replacing GN fasts) IEP Bi Mode 2x5 car calling at KGX, Biggleswade, St Neots, Huntingdon and splitting Peterborough to...
What about on sections from Peterborough to Huntington and St Neots to Biggleswade, surely a class 91's would be faster than a 365 even with the slower acceleration.
This is my first post, so do forgive me if this that already been talked about but I am of the view that stock such as the IC225 should not be wasted once the IEP program takes place on the ECML and they they should be used to at least replace the 365s doing the Great Northern fast to...
