The original Clansman left Euston in the timings of one of the regular Euston Birminghams then continued up the WCML from Birmingham. It left Euston about 9am and was in Carlisle about 14.00. It had an extended stay here as it was rewatered then continued to Motherwell, off to Mossend for a loco...
sprinterguy - but don't ask me what happened last week!
I thought they were great places to live but these days a bathroom shared by 6 or more plus one tiny two pin plug per room wouldn't meet people or equipment's requirements!
I was there in the early 80s - towers were Dalton, Lawrence and Stafford back then with Dalton being closest to Saltley. I was in Dalton, 11th floor, but on the wrong side to see any railway lines but our kitchen looked towards St Andrews and a constant stream of trains was visible on various...
Saw this head north from Macclesfield yesterday - it had been in the southbound side loop platform so must have arrived early and was letting northbound stuff pass. Bit of a reminder of the old days with Virgin XC trains apart from the rear loco! 47501 (leading going north) and 47813.
In the early 70s there were still summer Saturday holiday trains along the Newcastle and Carlisle. One went to Blackpool and the other to Largs via Dumfries using some freight only lines in Ayrshire. I think the latter originally went to a branch serving Butlins in Ayr but changed destination...
Way back when I was very familiar with Carlisle station (lets call it 30 odd years ago!) the layout was the same as now. Then the centre roads were normally used for stabling locos or coaching stock. To use them for through traffic involves blocking both up and down mainlines due to the access...
And the Lincoln avoiding line that was present at the time. Same also used by the SO Newcastle - Yarmouth train.
The three you mentioned were also used by trains coming from the Sheffield direction including the SO Manchester - Yarmouth.
The joint line was pretty busy on a Saturday up...
In early January I will be flying to Geneva then travelling on by train to Leysin in a group of 8 people including 4 children.
Looking on the Swiss Rail site there doesn't seem to be anything to purchase apart from individual single tickets. Some friends who did a similar journey last year...
A summer Saturday Weymouth to Nottingham (I think) via Leicester used to do similar to save reversal in New Street which was incredibly busy on a summer Saturday. I used it once around 1981 with a pair of 31s - it also used the old Nuneaton avoiding line.
I work alongside this line and have seen the occasional Voyager going along the line, normally southbound. I think these pre-dated the Chester turns so I always assumed there had been a problem on the WCML and they'd come off the WCML at Hartford and diverted down through Middlewich to get to...
Cheers D1009 - the platform boards at Piccadilly were showing the 22:15 as first stop Milton Keynes and thats what the staff said but heyho! Got back quicker in the end anyway as we were at Piccadilly earlier than expected.
Any idea how busy they were?
Trains were due to be 22.15, 22.40, 22.55 and 23.30. We were travelling to Macclesfield where according to National Rail they would all stop. When we got back to Piccadilly just after 22.00 the first Virgin train to Macclesfield was showing as 22.40 and the 22.15 was first stop Milton Keynes...
Last time I was in Tullie House there was some interesting railway material.
Going from the station the Cathederal, Tullie House and the Castle are one after the other along Castle Street. The railway is just to the left of the castle when you get to the dual carriageway.
Also along Castle...
Back in the days of sleepers the Preston north end bay used to stable the sleeping car dropped off the Barrow sleeper so technically passengers did depart and arrive there though just on a shunt movement. Sleeper would remain there all day before heading back south.
Got to be my childhood home of Carlisle - lovely, airy station and nice sandstone buildings. Great variety of traffic. Spent many a happy day there on the end of platform 8 from where you could also see the old avoiding lines!
There were a few Mk1s like this. As non-passenger vehicles they had 8xxxx numbers from memory. As mentioned above there are still some in charter trains.
From my earliest spotting days in the mid 70s I don't recall seeing any in normal service trains but do remember them in charters back...
The coal yard at Great Corby was still operational into the 70s I'm sure though by the late 70s, when I used to visit a friendly signalman in the box, it had gone. It was opperated by a coal merchant by then rather than a private yard.
I doubt there was a station in Great Corby as the one in...
