    Piracy - (torrents etc).

That's good to hear, thanks for providing us with that assurance. :) Generally I only download/torrent stuff I already own but have misplaced the original media for. Occasionally I will also download things that are literally impossible to buy due to their being of limited value to the...

Best post-1998 built rolling stock for comfort

I think the 442s were more comfortable and had a more intercity style ambience, but in almost every other respect 444s are superior. Now that the interior of the 442s has been desecrated there is no contest. The sometimes 'interesting' ride quality of the 444s has been improved by the recent...

The end of the 60W bulb...

It could be down to the light fittings themselves, I'm no electrician but there was a fitting in our house that used to kill energy savers.

Best post-1998 built rolling stock for comfort

I'd go for a 175/180 on the diesel front; if you ignore all the introduction and subsequent reliability problems they're actually pretty good trains from a passenger perspective. As for EMUs, the 333s seem popular and from my limited experience they are pretty good, but I'd rather not be on a...

The end of the 60W bulb...

The ones in our house tend to last for several years, compared to a couple of months, or a year at most depending on use, for standard incandescent bulbs.

NX management called for Southern 171 routes to be electrified

But surely they can only operate with 377s on an emergency basis, and even then are limited to 5mph, so they aren't that compatible. 170392, which was a SWT unit with a BSI coupler until 2007, was converted to a 171/7 with Dellner very quickly. The 171/8s do present more of a problem though.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

Creating a train full of drunks during major disruption is probably not a good idea.

The end of the 60W bulb...

Necessary "evil". I don't get what the fuss is about energy saving light bulbs, we have them in nearly all of our rooms and once you get used to the fact the light is a slightly different tone to incandescent bulbs there isn't really a noticeable decline in the light levels.

General Biblical Debate (trying to prove the Earth is an "upright circle")

I guess he must've got hold of Maximus Cliffordus.

General Biblical Debate (trying to prove the Earth is an "upright circle")

And we're supposed to just take your word for this are we? Right... I say nothing that is good in this world comes from God because he simply doesn't exist. You should believe me because I am saying it.

Southern Rail Trip Southampton Central to London Victoria

That's not always the case, some 377s have 2+2 throughout. Quite frankly, it's a confusing mess of a fleet.

    Scottish Universities..Charges for non-Scottish students.

If the number of university places were cut to a more reasonable number, with high entry requirements, so only those who it really suits are able to go then it might be worthwhile having the taxpayer fund them.

    Converting 450s to 350s (SWT/ LM/ Northern cascade?)

That's not an insurmountable problem as the moulds could be rebuilt quite cheaply if the order was large enough. Besides the stock wouldn't need to be exactly the same as the existing Class 444s; just fully compatible, 23 metres long and with a similar interior specification. The ex-LSWR...

    Converting 450s to 350s (SWT/ LM/ Northern cascade?)

I'd like to see a new batch of 444s for SWT, allowing 450s to replace the 458s, and the 450/5s to be extended to five coaches. This would cut SWT down to just three EMU fleets, 444 (express), 450 (outer suburban) and 455 (inner suburban). The SWT fleet is skewed too far in favour of outer...

Minister calls for fewer announcements on trains

Bear in mind that all of those announcements, except for the Safety Information/Personal Items ones which play randomly after every few stops, and the one about buying a Ticket which plays when the CIS code is input, are triggered manually by the guard.

    GCSEs

Good luck all with GCSE results. Suprised we didn't have a thread about A level results last week. Have I missed something, or are you saying you were 1 year old when you had your daughter?

    Brockenhurst Station

Slightly unrelated, but is there any reason why the Waterloo - Poole workings don't use platform 4 regularly? It would make connections easier for disabled people and would mean the barrow crossing could be semi-permanently deployed across platform 1. Permissive working is fully allowed on...

    RailUK v Facebook

Put it this way, the quality level of conversation on here is considerably higher than on Facebook. I generally only use the latter for seeing what other people are up to. On a completely unrelated note, this is one of my real bugbears. The singular word for those of a female persuasion is...
