London Midland to be broken up?

Me too ... I can't recall ever having a single complaint against London Midland, and I'm a regular passenger. The service from Northampton to Euston is the best it has ever been in my opinion (although I did used to prefer it when they used the Cobbler rakes :D)

The furthest you've travelled for a day by train?

Always wanted to do that journey. One day :)

Northern introduce pre-Christmas loco hauled services

I haven't boarded a train as an enthusiast in seventeen years -I might come out of retirement for one day only if that happened :)

Strangest thing you've heard/seen on the rail network...

This is a vague memory, but does anybody remember the lady that used to put smarties on the buffer beam of electric locos when they arrived at stations in the West Mids area? I recall seeing her do this at last once at Rugby circa 1989/1990.

    1827 Dingwall - Wick (26/9/14)

If Altnabreac is so remote, why does it even have a station?

    What does 'thrash' mean?

Best thrash experiences for me were : Greek ALCo A-468 leaving Athens on the overnight to Thessaloniki back in 1996 ... load 16 and UNBELIEVABLY loud. I'd heard rumours of that engines thrash before then, but still couldn't believe what I was hearing. Irish A-Class 019 leaving Cork for...

Passengers - would you report a fare dodger?

That's very different. There's a much bigger moral obligation to not sponge off of the state and John Q. Taxpayer than there is to not jump on a train and hitch a free ride. What's the worst thing that can happen if somebody doesn't buy a ticket? Practically nothing. There is the...

Passengers - would you report a fare dodger?

No I wouldn't, and I've no time for grasses either. It's got absolutely nothing to do with me. If they make it without paying, fair play. If not, they get what they deserve. Simple as that in my eyes. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- It's fair evasion, not rape. Would you go...

    Longest day trip

I can't be 100% sure if this was actually what we did, it was around 1987/88 and I was only ten/eleven years old at the time, but I seem to recall us doing the sleeper from Euston to Aberdeen, then heading straight back to Kings Cross on the first HST of the day, then another tram straight back...

would this bother you?Or would you 'expect' it on a train?

I never say anything when a child is annoying, I just stick my headphones in and turn the volume up enough to drown them out. I did have the misfortune to be sat next to a four(ish) year old on a flight from Sydney to London a few years ago .. 22 hours of torture!!. I comtemplated opening...

I love the way he describes the HST as having 27,000 horsepower!! haha

    Paddington stampede

Euston do it with London Midland trains too. Every time I'm down there, practically all of the trains have their platform announced except the LM one I'm waiting for. A massive crowd gathers on the concourse, and then you get the mad stamped the second the platform is displayed, only to get...

    Stupid passengers

I remember back in the late 80's we were heading up to Crewe for the first Crewe to Cardiff train (a 37 I think), and our plan to get there was to drive to Rugby and catch the northbound overnight that stopped there as far as Crewe. We were shocked when we sailed straight through Crewe...

If you could travel back in time, what service would you like to travel on?

It's amazing that out of all the diesel hauled stuff I had years ago, I still think there aren't many better rail experiences than Euston to Glasgow behind an 81/85 in mk1 stock. One of my most memorable was when I dropped on a Euston - Glasgow relief at Euston formed of an 81 and Network...

If you could travel back in time, what service would you like to travel on?

When I was a kid, I always wanted to travel in a first class Pullman, with full restaurant service. I was always gutted when we got on a train that had the service, but we'd be sat in bucket class. Cross Country Grill in the old mk1 buffet with plastic orange seats was the closest I got.

I'm definitely going for the Dominos lunch for £1 on Monday!!

Trivia: Longest length of time have you been on the same train for?

32 hours is my longest which was Hanoi to Nha Trang in Viet nam. First class sleeper which included meals .... £15!! After that it was Delhi to Varanasi in India ... about 18 hours, but was heavily delayed somewhere whilst I was asleep. Woke up to hear the thrashing of a pair of massive...

If you could travel back in time, what service would you like to travel on?

Not so much a service, but a move. I always wished I could have done the 20.45 Carlisle to Perth mail train which used an electric to Mossend for a Type 2 or 37 forward to Perth, followed by the 01.45 (I think) Perth to Aberdeen, which then formed a 4am'ish mail train to Elgin which sat in the...

If you could travel back in time, what service would you like to travel on?

Northampton to Peterborough behind a class 31 back in the 1960's.
