    Grand Central Chaos

I doubt you'll get the taxis paid but think EC should have accepted GC tickets in the cirmumstances. Allowing only about 45 minutes spare is cutting it a bit fine but probably unavoidable thanks to football selling it's soul to Sky TV and allowing TV to set kick off times with no consideration...

East Coast Franchise Short Listed Bidders

I'd be very happy to see First's Pullman Restaurants & Travelling Ceks on the ECML. But very unhappy to see Virgin's Pendolinos.

    Overnight Sevices.

I've used German sleepers - Paris - Munich, Hamburg - Brussels (now runs to Paris), Milan - Cologne. French - Chur & Zurich to Paris / Bruseels (doesn't run any more - trains seemed very old) French - Italian - Venice & Milan - Paris All were enjoyable ways to travel. Quality varies but...

Running locos around at terminus stations

One of my childhood memories of trains is watching trains depart from Paddington with the loco from the buffer end following it down the platform. Would have been mid to later 1960s.

Is First Class good on a FGW HST?

FGW HST standard class has already been spoiled by cramming in loads of seats to accomodate short distance commuters. By taking out a first class coach they will effectively price most passengers out of first class - few can afford walk on first class fares. Yet another example of modern train...

Is First Class good on a FGW HST?

It is comfortable, quiet and if there's a Travelling Chef, has excellent catering. Otherwise the free food isn't up to much but that doesn't bother me - I'd rather pay for what I want to eat. Sadly now the government want to get reduce first class accommodation it will no longer have the benefit...

08.20 Euston to Manchester. What are chances I'll get a seat?

I'm planning to get the 9.40 Euston - Manchester as far as Crewe, where I'm meeting someoen then travelling on to Liverpool(v West Ham). Assumed, wrongly it seems, that it would be fairly quiet. Hopefully most of the London based Man Utd & Newcastle fans will want to arrive at Picadilly earlier...

    How late is irritating?

I find it more irritating to have to listen to repeated apologies for the 'delay and inconvenience caused', when a train is 3 minutes late.

    Getting on the wrong train

Done this a few times. Worst was at Brussells when I rushed up steps and jumped in train. Doors shut and I expected to to head off to Amsterdam - but it went the other way!

    East Midlands Trains catering

I do! and I miss it. Used to enjoy a good breakfast on way to meetings in Nottingham or Sheffield. What seems silly is that the chef is often travelling back north anyway so why not let him cook some breakfasts?

    Police at Worcester Yesterday

After being greeted in this way after arriving at Inverness on the sleeper I made some enquiries which I included in the book I was writing - At Inverness we were met by three policemen and a dog which sniffed at every passenger, young or old. There was not a word of greeting and my...

It was a great way to travel from London to Manchester. HST through good scenery for last hour and if you went to the front, a coach to yourself!

    HS2 and RAIL Magazine

I usually buy Rail and occasionally The Railway Magazine. Out of all the magazines I prefer Rail as it concentrates on modern railways without being too technical. I enjoy behind the scenes features on individual trains (such as this issue’s Highland Chieftain), stations, lines, depots etc...
