Rovers and the Sleeper

Hi all,

Two quick questions:

(1) If I have a 1st class ALR, starting on a Friday, can I take the sleeper from Paddington on the Thursday night, given that it departs at 2345? If not, I suppose I can always schlep out to Reading and pick it up there after midnight.

(2) I've struggled to find what the supplement is for the 1st class ALR from Paddington to Penzance for a sleeper solo berth. Can anyone help?

In answer to 1 I'm not sure but I think the answer will be No. But you could ask the TM before departure?

In respect to Number 2 I believe it is in the region of £50? But others may know better.

1. I can not see you being allowed to board at Paddington as it is the day before the rover starts. You should therefore be prepared to board the 2330 Cardiff service and change to the Sleeper at Reading- a connection of just under thirty minutes but the Sleeper can arrive early and then sit at Reading for a while due to slack pathing to allow for engineering works.

2. Honestly do not know. We just went in seated last summer as we wanted to be up to see the sunrise over the Sea Wall at Dawlish.

I think you can use the sleeper departing on the night before the ALR starts.

I believe Essexman is conflating the "easement" that allows staff using a box to travel from 22:00 the previous night (so a box dated 15/12 would be valid from 22:00 on 14/12 to 23:59:59 on 16/12).

No such easement is published for All Line Rovers, but ultimately it'd be up to the Senior Conductor (or whatever Great Western call them) on the night.

For the Night Riviera, the supplement is £50 for a Single berth (£70 per cabin for a Twin, but both berths have to be booked together), with all berths being treated as Standard Class.

Can't you board at Reading? IIRC you can use an ALR dated tomorrow on the Highland sleeper from Inverkeithing as it calls after midnight.

I agree with this analysis. It would be valid to purchase a single ticket to the first station passed after midnight and then rely on a condition 19(c) split so that the train does not need to call there. This is documented in our Fares and Ticketing guide here.
