Oxford - Ramsgate Merrymaker excursion in the mid/late 70s

These aren't alternatives :) It would be unusual for the train to take anything but the direct route via Bromley South; whether it went via Nunhead or Herne Hill would be down to the signaller on the day (there would have been a booked route, but any disruption and that could be changed - it...

Have I got this right re Eurostar journeys?

Interrail is almost always cost-effective for journeys from beyond Greater London, provided you can get the Passholder fares when you want. I would budget EUR20 for the TGVs though as the cheaper fares are quota-controlled; even so, you are still in pocket :) Yes, TERs are unreservable, except...

    Worksop-Bradford on Boxing Day

Presumably you mean Saturday 26th rather than the transferred date of Monday 28th? Do you have a deadline (eg 1500?) :)

    Unbuilt Connection to London Waterloo?

The 1:1250 maps of 1951 show two different versions of the Festival of Britain site (amazing that the OS recorded such ephemera!) and in the second the turntable has been covered by an unspecified building. Belvedere Rd Bridge still shows where the siding joined the Up Fast. I think the Shell...

DB delays with ticket bought from SNCB

She should be prepared for SNCB/DB to reckon the delay as under 120min, as the engineering works timetable applies, not the times given at the time of booking :(

Thanks. I did wonder if that was what you meant.

    Euston Dining Club Menu 1963

Spaghetti bol with chips isn't that odd - up north (possibly down south too) other pasta dishes such as lasagne are often offered with chips (salad as an alternative if you are lucky).

Are buckled rails purely a British problem?

Depends what you mean: "delivered" to me implies some improvement. I would be happier to say "maintained" a safe railway, as the nationalised system could hardly be described as unsafe.

Does Northern Use Dynamic Pricing for Advances?

IME prices move upwards but only fairly last minute (that might depend on the route though.

“Buy before you board” - policy where ticket buying facilities are a long way away from the train

Yes, the signage isn't brilliant but there is a step-free route of 100m or so to the TO and various machines? Isnt there a machine by the ramp to P3/5? Not obvious from 2 though :) (From memory, just check when I have time...

    Caledonian Sleeper to mainland Europe?

I agree that's optimistic. Fortunately you then don't have to make Paris for 0745. 0910 would be fitting for those who remember the last cross-channel sleeper, and 12hr means 20.00 from Waverley :) Still highly unlikely!

    Caledonian Sleeper to mainland Europe?

The first two Paris arrivals appear to be 0747 (M-Th) and 0809. So the hypothetical sleeper could arrive at 0743, which is a bit early given the clock change but not bad. A 10-hour journey (non-tilt, please, and 200km/h!) would therefore leave Edinburgh around 2100 which is reasonable. (in...

Set down only - 2230 Birmingham New Street to Worcester Foregate Street

In this case, having a taxi/minibus on standby at the station (which is presumably unstaffed, so the potential passenger has to be able to identify the location unaided.....

Saturdays and Sundays should be inside the working week for drivers at all TOCs (not just some as at present)

Did they? Or did they simply re-roster staff away from the quiet midweek days to the weekends? Where? All the operators I know about operate a significantly reduced service on Sundays.

Constant delays around the Sheffield area - what can be done to improve the situation?

Yes, but having sidings there means ECS over the Nunnery to Midland section which is already congested, hence wanting to locate them to the south. Sorry, I'd overlooked your idea of a third track.
