I think you can use the sleeper departing on the night before the ALR starts.

I find it more irritating to have to listen to repeated apologies for the 'delay and inconvenience caused', when a train is 3 minutes late.

Done this a few times. Worst was at Brussells when I rushed up steps and jumped in train. Doors shut and I expected to to head off to Amsterdam - but it went the other way!
