I think that was my point in using the word "inverse". No Byelaw or RoRA offense was committed because the OP wasn't challenged. They paid their fare and they were in possession of the ticket when boarding the train (even though they thought they weren't!)

Did you actually pass the Sandhills ticket booth after you got off the train? What was the crowd situation like on the platform there? Was it such that it would have been difficult/unsafe to go against the flow of people on an island platform?

You're only likely to have to pick up a paper ticket if you don't have a smartphone or your overall journey involves the Tube. There is another instance - they stop people buying etickets for those stations where short-ticketing and donutting are rife!
