Had 220029 which think newly refurbished, on the 14.04 Edinburgh-Plymouth ( from York to Plymouth) on Monday 17th Aug, which got to try out First Class, due to getting a Seat Frog 1st class upgrade for £36.00. I thought the seats looked nice, but they were quite hard, and maybe prefer the standard class seats for comfort, as others have said. I would still personally go First class for the right price, for its extra space and complimentary food and drinks.

That looks terrible. Looks like it should be next in the queue for a full strip down and refurb.

Us passengers don’t help though, I was due to be on a Leeds to Reading service which was cancelled on Saturday and somebody told me it was announced to be because of vandalism inside the train. Anybody know what it was?

221s aren't being done till 220s are done so got awhile yet. I don't think many crosscountry passengers will mind if peeling vinyls, they just want it to turn up

I have just gotten off 221141 at Birmingham and it is holding up well internally compared to a few of the other 221s I've been on. The worst units externally seem to be the ex-Avanti units, specifically 221112 and 221115 but they are meant to be left until last of course.

Is it possible they might skip the queue for some units? My train today is booked as 221141 which reminded me of the state I saw it in back on the 7th August.

(Image shows unit 221141 with very patchy paintwork on one of the driving motors. This is the case along each of the 4 coaches.)

Was a result of graffiti removal I believe.

On 220028, Edinburgh to Cardiff. I don’t like the seats in First Class - agree with others who say it’s a downgrade in terms of comfort. The accessible toilet in Coach A already has a misaligned toilet seat - risk that someone could fall off the edge - or break the plastic seat, if sufficiently heavy!!

Off topic, but usual deception from CC regarding catering in First Class - no sandwiches (or hot food) load for First Class - but they did have sandwiches (well, one by the time it reached me) for sale from the Standard Class trolley. Someone (advertising standards?) should COMPEL them to supply to First Class ticket holders, regardless of “separate supply chains” which is just a con. It’s the same company, for goodness sake!

Just 2 under the halfway mark now! They’re getting there.

And yet they still keep eluding me!

Somehow, even as a semi regular XC passenger, I've only managed to get on one refurbished set and then I was stood in the vestibule for the whole journey, so not sure it really counts!

Will there be a voyager that’ll have the pride colours on it (like 220005) as it appears the majority of operators have one and XC did it on 170103, will they do it on a voyager too to follow the trend?

As currently theres two pride 170s (170103 and 170618) I wouldnt be surprised if one of the voyagers would go into pride livery (hopefully 005)

Just a note that 220027 is long term stopped with some problems to one driving car which is rumoured to require a replacement cab. Central Rivers have swapped 60727 into 220001 so that 220027 has 60701 as another defective car to repair.

Thanks for the information. Do you know what the cause of the problems is and when you say replacement cab, do you mean a replacement cab dome or a full rebuild please? Thanks.

Not really sure of the nature of set 27's injuries but know it is a big job, and because 60701 out of 220001 is also a big job they decided to make one good set out of the two for the short term.

Seems like an eminently sensible decision.
