    Dawlish-Teignmouth Overtaking

I've been on a 395 heading to Folkestone that overtook a stopper at Sandling. Also on HS1 when something broke down, we passed a couple of Eurostars.

What is Control (not a philosophical discussion!)

    Haha, it was never questioned!

What is Control (not a philosophical discussion!)

Is it still pronounced CON-trol, as it was when I worked at SouthEastern 30 or so years ago?

    "Doh" railway moments

As a child in Wimbledon I asked my dad what the people at the end of the platforms were writing in their books. He told me they were collecting the numbers on the front of the train, which to my mind was a completely useless occupation - if you stood at Wimbledon for only an hour you'd get them...

    Journey London to Tenby

Thanks so much for this. Followed the advice and now all booked. Used the seat finder to get us a couple of adjacent tables. Really appreciate it!

    Journey London to Tenby

Hi I'm trying to use the site's booking platform to book a return trip for seven of us from London to Tenby, out 15th May 10.48 back 18th 09.36. We have two Senior Railcards, two Two Togethers and a Young Person's, but I can't find a way to add all of those to one booking - is there one and I'm...

How many stations are there called "Witton"?

I'm almost sure that the announcements at St Pancras for trains to Medway say Gillingham with a hard G - ie the one in Dorset, rather than with the correct soft G - can anyone corroborate or am I just cloth-eared?

London to Newcastle with breaks of journey

This is all really useful, thank you - will pass on to the person coming with me. She's starting in London but the additional complication is that we can't travel all the way together as I'm at a wedding in Yorkshire that weekend so I'll be starting from South Elmsall - but looking at tickets...

London to Newcastle with breaks of journey

Hi Will need to go from London to Newcastle on 2nd March, breaking at York, Northallerton and Darlington to visit branches of the retailer I work for, staying overnight in Newcastle, then going to Hexham the next day, and then straight back to London on Wednesday. In the past I've done one...

Trains stopping so far from exit points, why????

Ashford platforms 1&2 do this - the 8 and 12 car stops are in the same place so four cars come up from Dover, go right up the end, then another four come in from Canterbury to connect up and the whole train is then still further up the platform from the entrance, with another four car length...

    Platform Numbering Anomalies

From the Middleton Press Ashford to Dover volume (from when DWD was still open): "[The platforms] are still numbered 3 to 6 although nos 1 & 2 roads on the quayside are no longer in use."

When was Rail Alphabet 1 last used?

Some of the signs on the currently defunct Ashford International Eurostar platforms are in this alphabet.

Kings Cross - security with tape closing platform

No catering stuff but this happens all the time at St Pancras Southeastern platforms - full 12 coach trains come in and empty out while departing passengers wait on the platform. People stand clear of the doors, all works fine, generally get staff walking through before departure picking up rubbish.

TRIVIA: Junctions where the branch is straight-on, and the main is around the corner

Not sure what the junction name is after Sandwich (Minster South, possibly?) but the line straight on goes to Minster, only used a couple of times a day, and the main line to Ramsgate that most trains use curves sharply to the right.
