Lewes derailment - Thursday 13th August

Possibly with the roots taking a chunk of embankment with it. Maybe wider issues with trees allowed to grow trackside.

Pros and cons of Continuous Welded Rail (CWR)

I'm not sure 60 foot lengths of rail had expansion joints capable of these sorts of temperatures.

Bedford (Elstow) collision reporting by Daily Express: is this accurate or misleading?

Daily Telegraph has a strange extra snippet (and sensationalist headline) but doesn't seem to be from the RAIB report. Even if it was obvious what it meant it doesn't sound like it would have made any difference to this incident: A formal letter issued to Network Rail in January 2013 by the...

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

And it has to work harder the more bodies on board. At 40 degrees the aircon on Venice trams couldn't cope with a packed tram, with people fainting. I wondered why an old bus (with opening windows) rolled up at the tram stop.

Trainline - is it worth it?

I've just reimbursed expenses of an external speaker at a conference. I gently queried the use of Trainline and its fees (and not finding a split fare). The speaker's PA explained why - is it a fair rationale? "The reason we still use Trainline is that we are booking trains on a very regular...

    Leasing old stations

When Network Rail or ArchCo have let station buildings get into poor condition but there's a chance to let them commercially or for community use, are there any stories (good or bad) of how that's worked? I get the impression that the lessor, having let the buildings get dilapidated, expects...

    Cambridge-Oakham-London-Cambridge

In May, for a conference, I want to find best flexible fare for someone coming Cambridge to Oakham on a Monday (off peak), then Oakham to London next day (arriving before 0930) then back to Cambridge (probably but not certainly) in the evening peak. Any exotic suggestions? And why does Classic...

Warrington to Edinburgh but break return journey at Durham...

I'll try my local station and see if they know how to do it. Presumably Waverley TO would. 1773793431 So if he wanted to book an off-peak ticket out via Carlisle and back via Durham, what does he ask for? (National Train Enquiries said he'd have to buy singles...) 1773966250 local station found...

Warrington to Edinburgh but break return journey at Durham...

Ooh, I await the expert opinion on that!

Warrington to Edinburgh but break return journey at Durham...

A friend is after a Scottsh trip, Warrington to Edinburgh, but asking whether he could break journey at Durham on the return (not same day). £108.10 OPR via Carlisle, £134.30 any permitted (though trainsplit didn't find it using Leeds or Berwick as route). I've looked at exotic alternatives but...

    Trainsplit old format

I would rather fix Flexible as my default preference whether switching station search during one event or as my permanent default.

    Trainsplit old format

It defaults back to advance tickets with every change of search. Goes on the long list of techie "updates" that make things worse. I still miss the few TOC sites which presented the whole day's fares so you could scroll down to find cheapest fares.

    Trainsplit old format

One pain of the new site is no easy button to switch from fixed time to flexible.
