A friend is after a Scottsh trip, Warrington to Edinburgh, but asking whether he could break journey at Durham on the return (not same day). £108.10 OPR via Carlisle, £134.30 any permitted (though trainsplit didn't find it using Leeds or Berwick as route). I've looked at exotic alternatives but can't see any cheaper way.

Break of journey is not permitted on the outward leg of Warrington-Edinburgh Off Peak Return via Carlisle, OK on the return leg or both ways via Durham.
Cheapest way for a circular trip might be to buy the cheaper via Carlisle ticket, and then excess the return via Durham (the excess being half the fare difference).
Might need expert confirmation.

Ooh, I await the expert opinion on that!

£108.10, plus half the difference, i.e. £13.10, so £121.20 in total?

Although you might need to shop around to get a ticket office who can do the excess on just the return portion, rather than getting charged the full difference

I'll try my local station and see if they know how to do it. Presumably Waverley TO would.

So if he wanted to book an off-peak ticket out via Carlisle and back via Durham, what does he ask for?
(National Train Enquiries said he'd have to buy singles...)

local station found how to do it. It's in the stardesktop manual.
