    ATW 175s

Since the start of this year I've had to travel twice a week from Milford Haven to Bridgend for business. The journey there is just fine. It's early, not too busy, always get a seat. The return journey takes the proverbials though. In ten months, today was only the second time I've managed to...

    Railways in Pop Culture

Surprised nobody has mentioned this brilliant example of ignoring the "please keep your head inside the train" sign yet.

    Station pedestrian crossings

Surprised nobody has mentioned Carmarthen yet. The only access to platform 2 is via a ground level crossing just beyond the limits of platform 1.

Passengers watching "Adult Material" on the train

I was on a train once and a man sat opposite me was watching something on his tablet. He stood up to get something from the overhead and accidentally yanked his headphones out the tablet. The entire carriage was adorned with the noise of a lady. She must have been celebrating something because...

    Arriva Trains Wales Coradia repaints

I came here to post this very thing. I was sat with some ATW staff en route to Carmarthen yesterday who were discussing the end of the 175's and their replacement with 158's from "somewhere, I think, up north". Two of the staff knew, one didn't but responded with "Thank [expletive] for that, I...

What drives you round the bend when using the train?

Well I was gonna make a sleeper gag but I've been beaten to it. On a serious note though, overcrowding takes the cake for me.

Best & Worst ‘Live’ Station Announcers.

The best ones are where she blames other trains for late running. "We're sorry to announce that the 14:04 Arriva Trains Wales service to Milford Haven has been delayed by approximately fourteen minutes. This is due to [beat] The train approaching platform 1A is the..."

Best & Worst ‘Live’ Station Announcers.

Bridgend gets so many delay apologies that Ruth and Glyn often interrupt themselves to announce arrivals, making it seem like they're apologizing for train that's just pulled into the station.

Best & Worst ‘Live’ Station Announcers.

The feeble, tacked on "thank you" gets a giggle out of me every time.

Best & Worst ‘Live’ Station Announcers.

She gives a great ANDDDD on the last two stations towards Milford Haven. She doesn't announce Johnston because it's a request stop, so she says "We will be calling at the following principle stations. [noticeable, awkward gap]...ANDDD Milford Haven" Then on approach to MFH (well past...

Best & Worst ‘Live’ Station Announcers.

Oh you're good! :D That's the first time I've heard Ruth do the safety announcement in the first video you linked. Usually all I hear is "Emergency information is available aboard this train. For your safety, please take time to read it" I wonder what other safety announcements she does...

Best & Worst ‘Live’ Station Announcers.

Ahh that's the name. Thanks! Glyn likes to say Hendy-Gwyn Ar Daf for Whitland, despite it not being named that in anything official besides his announcement. The station signage, NRE site, ATW's timetables etc has it as just Hendy-Gwyn. He does say Clunderwen perfectly despite half of...

Is it "Sugar Loaf" or "Sugar Loaf Halt"?

I don't really know a lot about the area (I live on the other side of Wales). I believe Porthmadoc was the "old Welsh" name used through to the 60's. The Ffestiniog's Porthmadog Harbour Station used to be known as "Portmagoc (old)" for a while. Having a look on Wiki will tell you more.

    Train Simulator 2017

The only thing I've heard is the new UE4 engine edition is still in development alongside the current TSxx engine, with the current one still being supported once the UE4 version releases. I don't imagine there'll be a UE4 release this year. UE has quite the learning curve and it'll take...

Is it "Sugar Loaf" or "Sugar Loaf Halt"?

They're both technically correct. It's one of those places where both names are used interchangeably. At one time it was an actual halt, serving cottages occupied by PW gangs and signalmen. Time moved on and it became a regular station for visitors, local residents (all two of them :P) etc. Some...
