Thanks for the swift responses everyone- it looks like the ticket is not valid before 12:00. I’ll recommend my friend requests the return half of the ticket be excessed to off peak at the booking office prior to travel or if the office is not open approaches the guard immediately after boarding.

Beware the 12:29 is usually only a single 3 car unit until Salisbury so will be rather ‘cosy’. The 2 later trains you can catch are both usual 6 car so will have more room.
