Thanks for the swift responses everyone- it looks like the ticket is not valid before 12:00.
I’ll recommend my friend requests the return half of the ticket be excessed to off peak at the booking office prior to travel or if the office is not open approaches the guard immediately after boarding.

Am I correct in thinking I won’t experience any problems with stopping short at one of Redruth or Truro on a Axminster - Penzance off peak day return? I intend to return from Penzance

Beware the 12:29 is usually only a single 3 car unit until Salisbury so will be rather ‘cosy’.
The 2 later trains you can catch are both usual 6 car so will have more room.
Thanks for the replies - I think I’ll abandon the idea of going via Castle Cary and check out how full Crewkerne station car park is on Saturday evening if full I’ll drive straight to Yeovil Junction on Sunday morning as there’s always spaces there.

I’ve been looking at ticket options for Crewkerne- Newcastle return via LNER. 2 Super off peak singles work out at £154.10 with a Senior Railcard.
I ‘ve previously looked up the Crewkerne-Glasgow fare which is £153.50 for an Off peak return again with Senior Railcard.
