Taking an earlier train when booked train is cancelled

Let’s say I have an Advance from Birmingham to Norwich via Peterborough. If the XC Birmingham-Peterborough is cancelled, I can take the previous train, which is 1h earlier, under the new industry guidelines. Does this flexibility extend to the entire journey - ie can I take the EMR service 1h...

More tourist trains on the West Highland Line?

The West Highland Line is popular with tourists for its scenery, but for most of its length, it’s served only by aging DMUs. Is there enough capacity for a tourist-oriented premium service between Glasgow and Fort William (or Oban)? Obviously the Jacobite has been successful between Fort...

Trivia: Tickets that are impossible to use

Fort William to Glasgow, super off peak day return. The first valid outward train gets into Queen St after the last valid return train departs. Still worth buying on occasion though as it’s cheaper than any of the non-Advance singles

How does dispatch work for 12 car trains at Purfleet?

Purfleet has stopping markers for 4, 8 and 12 coach 357 consists on the northbound platform. The 4 and 8 coach stop markers are accompanied by banks of monitors for (presumably) DOO dispatch, but there aren’t any at the 12 coach marker. Are 12 coach trains dispatched differently?

Avanti website ticketing issue - is this unusual?

If the tickets are valid via London including a tube transfer, they can’t be issued as e-tickets because tube barriers can’t read them.

    755s on London - Norwich?

Today’s 10:00 Liverpool St to Norwich is formed of 11 coaches worth of 755s instead of the usual 745. RTT doesn’t seem to show anything unusual about the route, and other trains on the route today seem to be 745s. Why is this - a shortage of the usual stock perhaps?

Why do many Cross-City trains skip Duddeston?

Is it just low demand, or are there pathing/operational reasons?

Rail Sail to Dublin - What Happens If Trains or Boats Delayed?

I’ve missed the ferry on this connection and the ticket was automatically accepted on the next Stena crossing. I don’t know if Irish Ferries would have accepted a ticket issued to Dublin Port Stena, but we missed the IF boat as well so I never got to find out. A word of warning: the ferry...

London to Sheffield Any Permitted returns

Return tickets from London to Sheffield used to be available that were valid either direct on EMR from St Pancras, or up the ECML and changing at Doncaster. With LNER’s move to single-leg pricing, these have all disappeared, and the Anytime Single is the only Any Permitted ticket left. This...

    Avanti West Coast Shop

I was on a double Avanti Voyager set earlier this year where the front set shop was only taking cash and the rear set only taking card.

Fares with time restrictions that make them unusable

I'm looking to travel from Fort William (FTW) to Glasgow (GLQ), one way, on a weekday. Looking at BRFares, the only (non-Advance) single is the Anytime Day Single (SDS) at £34.50, but there's a cheaper Super Off-Peak Day Return for £26. The obvious thing to do is to buy the return and throw...

    Overlapping Two Together railcards (hypothetical)

A, B and C are travelling together. A and B hold a Two Together railcard. A and C also hold a Two Together railcard. (It is explicitly permitted to hold multiple Two Together railcards with different people.) Can A, B and C all purchase and travel with Two Together railcard-discounted tickets?

    Family leisure travel in London

You can definitely get this discount added at a station on an Oyster TVM, if the staff are feeling helpful enough.

eTickets - you have to print for use at Moorgate??

The problem seems to be that TfL staff the gateline, and unsurprisingly don’t have any training about e-tickets. I got stopped at Old St a few months ago because the gateline attendant had never seen an e-ticket before and was convinced it was just a TOD booking confirmation. Not sure even...

    Triangular journey London-Birmingham-Manchester-London

I need to travel from London to Birmingham, then 1 week later, from Birmingham to Manchester followed (on the same day) by Manchester to London. All journeys will be at a weekend, and I'd prefer flexible tickets. So far the best I can find is an Off-Peak Return (route: Any Permitted) from...
