Cross Country trains: Should I expect them to be full?

Ah, I hadn't thought about doing 1st class for only one of the legs. That's a good idea, thanks! As far as I can tell I can't choose a seat on crosscountrytrains.co.uk (which I assume is the site most likely to allow it). I can ask it to reserve me one, but it just picks one for me; I can't see...

Cross Country trains: Should I expect them to be full?

Hi folks, I'm planning to take a trip from Oxford to Leicester shortly, and as I'll have luggage and be with a nervous post-pandemic traveller, I was trying to work out how full the trains are likely to be, and whether it might be worth shelling out for 1st class (or maybe even a taxi, looking...

    Oxford - Brighton routes

Thanks all; sounds like it ought to still be valid, then! In fact, I've discovered that gwr.com is happy to give me that route. And thanks too for the railcard suggestion; I do actually already have one, but didn't mention it as it wasn't directly relevant to my question. Thanks again!

    Oxford - Brighton routes

Hi folks, If, on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/, I ask to go from Oxford (OXF) to Brighton (BTN) tomorrow at 11am, returning the day after at 11am, and then amend the search to 'travel via Wokingham (WKM)', then for the 53.40 off-peak fare it won't let me select a return journey via Clapham...

    Prosecution Brighton to Victoria

Season tickets don't permit doubling back, but they do permit making multiple journeys (and thus could be used to go from A to B and back again, provided they are valid from A to B). This may seem like a pedantic difference, but perhaps it is the cause of some of the confusion.

Person hit by a train at Witham - 24/01/2013

One sign says "IF NO LIGHT - PROCEED WITH CAUTION" while the other says "Cross only when green light shows". That seems like a contradiction to me, but I guess that normally either red or green would be showing, and only if something is broken would neither light be illuminated?

    London Underground 150

I had a great day chasing the train around London, with an afternoon in the V&A while it was back in the depot. I was a little worried that the stations would be heaving in the evening, when there wouldn't be any light to see it outside, but it turned out that even Baker Street was absolutely...

    Decent video camera

If you have a smartphone, then I wonder how well its camera stacks up compared to an 80 quid video camera? A quick Amazon search for "phone tripod mount" suggests that for 10-20 quid you'd be able to get something to attach a phone to a tripod.

    Sharing a railcard

Why buy a £15.80 ticket to Brighton if you can buy a £15.45 ticket to Lewes?

    Sharing a railcard

Yes, I meant "network railcard" everywhere I said "railcard". Thanks everyone for the confirmations!

    Vehicle Detectors

Hi all, At Combe station there are what appear to be 2 vehicle detectors (http://www.agd-systemes.fr/products/agd200uk.html) looking up the line. Does anyone know what the purpose of these is, that isn't already satisfied by track circuits, please? Thanks Ian

Use of 1st class when Std is overcrowded?

At Paddington, the train will be sitting in the platform for some time (listed as "Preparing" in the screens, I think) before it is announced which platform it will be. When the platform is announced, you get a swarm of people approaching from the London end, where the departures info is.
